IBM System x and SAP HANA
Hi, my name is Oliver Rettig and I’m based out of Boeblingen, Germany. I’m in an IBM group called the Solution Center of Excellence. Quite simply, our organization works with clients to solicit feedback on current technology and gain insight into their future requirements. We use this information to create solutions that client’s find highly valuable.
One of the solutions we have been focused on for the past few years is SAP HANA. I started collaborating with SAP on HANA in 2010 when IBM began its development and testing on the project. I’ve been consulting with clients for three years now on SAP HANA and of course I feel that IBM has the best solution on the market. In light of this week’s SAP SAPPHIRE NOW conference, I wanted to tell you about two of our client experiences where IBM was the only vendor that could meet their needs.
PUIG is an international cosmetics and fashion company based in Barcelona, Spain. Initially, they wanted to rapidly analyze and translate the huge volumes of data their organization compiles, which includes customer and partner comments, and reflect that feedback into their products and services. For some time, the company had been looking for the right combination of technology that would provide them the ability to tap into this data as transactions unfold real-time and have the most up-to-the-minute analysis of the information. With help from my team, PUIG chose an IBM System x3690 solution for SAP HANA for their business warehouse. PUIG chose to go with a smaller 256GB solution rather than a 512GB. They were thrilled with the impressive results. The IBM system lets them run their data queries much faster than on their previous system and allows them to integrate new data sources into their analytics, which previously could not be loaded due to performance issues. PUIG is seeing performance improvements of up to 500X and outstanding compression rates. Last year, PUIG wanted to add high-availability capabilities to their solution. They went with IBM naturally as we are the only vendor that can cluster smaller nodes. We configured a standby, high-availability node with automatic failover. With this fast and highly available solution, PUIG can now put more focus on new analytical views to increase the added value that the IBM SAP HANA solution provides to the company.
PUIG continues to appreciate their relationship with us because we maintain and value their investment. This is not a rip-and-replace situation. We consider it a journey and will grow their solution based on their business needs while protecting their original investment.
Large worldwide technology company
In another instance, we worked with a large, worldwide technology company based in Europe who wanted to move their huge ERP system to SAP HANA. IBM had large System x SAP HANA solutions up to 1TB; however, this company wanted to partner and collaborate with us on a unique solution that would fit their exact needs. While 4TB is sufficient for many, this company needed bigger because they wanted all their data on the same system for performance reasons.
Working with SAP, we were able to bump our System x SAP HANA solution up to 4TB. We even added the IBM MAX5 memory expansion unit to the configuration to bring the cluster to 6TB within a single node. And, we included a disaster recovery solution — a dual-site replication mechanism that would allow them to recover from a disaster of their production site if necessary.
In addition to being the only vendor that could provide a supported 6TB solution, this company valued our experience with SAP HANA, IBM’s quality of service and our turnaround time. From the date of order, we had the system delivered and installed within two weeks.
