The IBM Redbooks team recently published a new IBM Redpaper entitled "Building a Smarter Data Center with IBM Flex System and Juniper Networks QFabric". The paper highlights how the data center infrastructure has evolved over time and what's needed to remedy the escalating challenges in a smarter way. It also describes how to use the technologies within IBM Flex System and Juniper Networks QFabric to address complexity and mitigate the common constraints of the traditional data center infrastructure.
The paper explores the options and relationships between the physical and virtual components of IBM Flex System and Juniper Networks QFabric, while incorporating virtual gateways, security services, and edge routers as shown in the figure below.
The team that wrote the paper are subject matter experts from around the world: Bill White, IBM Redbooks team leader based in Poughkeepsie, New York, Hoi T. (Tony) Hon from IBM US, Veerendra Para from IBM India, and John Welsh from IBM Australia.
The team looked at many of today's data center issues when evaluating key functional requirements that can benefit from the integration of IBM Flex System and Juniper Networks QFabric, such as:
Business continuity and disaster recovery
Multi-tenancy (cloud environment)
Virtual machine mobility
To validate those requirements, the Redpaper team worked closely with Juniper Networks to define proof of technology test cases that prove IBM Flex System and Juniper Networks QFabric are viable components for building a smarter data center infrastructure. The proof of technology test cases documented in the paper demonstrates the validity of the required configurations and compatibilities, such as:
Connectivity of IBM Flex System to a QFabric redundant server node group with 10 GbE interfaces using a LAG to support business resiliency.
Steps to configure a dvSwitch within IBM Flex System for multitenant or security zone-separated virtualized-networking environments where centralized network management and reporting functions are required. And steps that occur when linking a virtual security layer with a physical security layer, using virtual gateways, (vGW) and security services (SRX) to enforce zone integrity on respective VMs.
Migration of a VM from one ESXi server within one IBM Flex System to one ESXi server within another through IBM Flex System Manager VMcontrol and Juniper Networks Junos Space Virtual Control.
