Analyst firm, IDC, recently released its competitive report on the top business rules vendors based on 2011 revenues. It’s good news that the overall market experienced healthy, double-digit growth (+11%). And IBM retains its lead over the second place vendor, FICO.
This concise report also includes a brief Future Outlook section wherein IDC mentions the broad appeal and suitability of business rules beyond its well-established niche in “general-purpose application development” and its stronghold in the financial services and public policy management areas. It’s good to read that IDC recognizes the broader-utility view of business rules, a utility that spans industries and business use cases. It’s something all of us in operational decision management – the next gen business rules – will continue to push given the broad base of successful implementations.
Although this post highlights a competitive report, the focus should be less about the competition and more about helping companies to identify situations where unlocking rules from existing applications can provide significant benefits; where business people can manage their own rule updates without waiting for IT.
If you’re curious about the broader appeal and utility of business rule management systems, here’s a top ten list of business use cases for Operational Decision Management – the next generation business rules.
