I would like to share some thoughts about technology as a lever of change. It is exciting to lead an organisation – IBM Global Business Services (GBS) – that is helping to transform not just some of our countries’ most influential organisations, but transforming the very fabric of our daily lives in Australia and New Zealand. As the largest business and technology consulting business globally, as well as in A/NZ, we have a world of capability and technology at our fingertips.
When you pass through a Qantas kiosk at an airport, that is the GBS consulting team at work. We are supporting the deployment of a new blood products management system for the Red Cross, helping to ensure that life-saving transfusions will be available when needed. Our business and technology consulting work is being showcased in many landmark projects that will impact all of us in many different ways.
With the signing of a significant contract to deliver the NASH project, we will be involved in a key part of the e-health information infrastructure services that forms the backbone of Australia’s national e-health system. NASH will provide a nationwide, secure and authenticated framework for issuing and managing security credentials for healthcare providers, such as Hospitals and GPs, to exchange health information.
What does this mean? By improving the quality and safety of health information – and by allowing that information to be shared – we can prevent medical errors, unnecessary hospitalisation and testing, and adverse medical events for all Australians. Again, it is technology that can literally save lives.
This is an exciting time for IBM Global Business Services in other fields, too, as we partner with companies that are driving explosive growth in natural resources; providing more environmentally-conscious energies; and implementing the next generation National Broadband Network (NBN) to provide Fibre-To-The-Home connectivity at 100Mbps to 90 percent of Australian premises.
These are just some of the ways that the work we are do is a lever of wide-reaching and profound social and economic change. But whether we are assisting our major banking clients in speeding on-line processes, or paving the way for smarter transport, or providing better management and administrative services for educational institutions, I am proud to say that all of the work that we perform in GBS is work that matters. It matters to me and it matters to everyone that I work with.
Working with our clients and across industries to implement business-changing solutions, is what gets us out of bed in the morning.
It’s our DNA.
