I’m going to predict that the people who know me
are going to LOL when they read this blog because I don’t tweet. This is ironic
because I am a certifiable Internet JUNKIE! For proof of this, I met by best
friends online and talk to them more than the people in my house. And when I do
see my online BFFs in person, we have our lifeline laptops with us to
feed the monkey when it demands to be fed. (Yes, we've chatted with each other on the Internet while sitting side-by-side. Mmm-hmmm. Nerds, I tell ya.)
But Twitter has never been my thing. I often wonder if I
need to be indoctrinated at some social media therapy center so that I can keep
my job as marketing communications specialist.Tiffany Winman, feel free to reply with any recommendations here or on
my Facebook Wall.
Ahh, Facebook. Definitely more my speed. Perhaps there is a way to tweet via Facebook
that I just haven’t learned yet. Tiff?
Ok, ok. So I have tweeted some for Pulse, if not much from my own neglected Twitter account. Tiffany, our social media guru, taught me
how to use a few cool tools, like HootSuite, which updates status with Twitter
and Facebook at the same time – which I loooove. A working IBMer mom of two
littles, I am all about multi-tasking. You know, two tweeting birds: one stone.
Check it out if you have the Twitter and/or Facebook Junkie Monkey on your
Take from me (or don't): there is no shame in being
clueless as to just what the heck the Twitter fuss is all about. But, if you
are attending Pulse this year, you should care.
This conference is going to be huge. Pulse will be host to
over 5000 attendees and feature over 300 client and IBM Business Partner
presentations. So while your ticket to Pulse can provide a glimpse of what the
near future will look like from the most uber-intelligent Tech and Business
experts, you are still going to miss a lot because it is impossible to be in
more than one place at a time.
Unless you use Twitter. Twitter is the closest thing to time
travel that we have right now. And if aren't planning to travel to Pulse the old-fashioned way by plane, you can use Twitter to beam yourself up to Vegas.

painless and only takes a minute. Do it now, K? THX!
your tweets ensures that your input is included in search results on your
subject matter. And you want this. People don’t tweet because they want to be
wallflowers. So they use hashtags.
wanted to know what a hashtag was but were too busy to Google it? A hashtag is
just a tag included inline with your status update.
tags are called hashtags because they are preceded by the "#"
character. The “#” prefix is
called the hash (mark) and in Twitter messages it is immediately followed,
without a space, by topic or issue you want to tag for others to find.
Together, you have a code called a “Hashtag.”
even ask me why it is a hashtag and not a poundtag. IDK.

Introducing Dean Kamen, who will deliver the Guest Keynote at Pulse 2011, "The Future Belongs to Inventors"
As an inventor and physicist, Dean Kamen has dedicated his life to developing technologies that help people lead better lives. As an inventor, he holds more than 440 U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of health care worldwide. The array of products and technologies invented and developed by Mr. Kamen and the engineering team at DEKA is extremely broad. Two notable breakthrough medical devices invented and developed by DEKA are the HomeChoice™ portable dialysis machine, marketed by Baxter Healthcare, and the iBOT™ Mobility System, a sophisticated mobility aid developed for Johnson & Johnson. With the Segway™ Human Transporter, Mr. Kamen aspired to improve upon the most basic form of transportation, walking, by allowing people to go farther, move more quickly, and carry more without separating them from their everyday walking environment.
Among Mr. Kamen’s proudest accomplishments is founding FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use and enjoy science and technology. In 2009, its flagship program, the FIRST Robotics Competition, will reach more than 42,000 high-school students on close to 1,700 teams in 40 regional competitions, seven district competitions, and one national championship. The FIRST Robotics Competition teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way.

The benefits are simple, but long reaching. We estimate over 7000 people will pass through the Pulse Expo. And with them, limitless opportunities to progress and develop leads in an environment super charged with the brightest talent, sharpest skill and most focused energy in the industry. If you were there last year, you know what I am talking about and are probably already committed to a Pulse 2012 sponsorship.
Although half of the sponsorship opportunities are still available as of today, they are being scooped up faster than previous years. Friends, now is the time to lock in your Pulse 2012 Expo Sponsorship. Book before December 16 and save a hefty $5K, unless you are a Pulse 2011 Sponsor Alumnus, then you save $10K. These are going fast, and it's no wonder. Just don't say I didn't tell you about it.
Every year, about this time, the creative juices start to flow as we start to gear up for IBM Pulse. Which stream will have the most interesting success stories? Which industry will produce the most creative abstract for a client presentation? What will energize clients to participate at Pulse? Who will get their 5 mins of fame at Pulse? All good questions! Let's see if I can help to answer them.
For years the Enterprise Asset Management track has been one of the largest at Pulse. This year, under the Smarter Physical Infrastructure stream, EAM will have 84 sessions. New this year will be 24 sessions under the "Industry case studies" track, which will no doubt produce some interesting submissions. Last year we had an agricultural industry submission that drew rave reviews. Refer here to see the diversity of industries in Latin America that were covered......from the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) story to Cristal Chile a bottle manufacturer .
Maximo Asset Management solutions have a broad industry presence and we hope that by having 24 sessions dedicated to industry case studies we will be able to touch as many industries as possible. Have you submitted your proposal yet? Click here to submit.
Another incentive that we created this year in order to solicit your creativity, is the 'If only I had Maximo" home video campaign. If you are anything like me, as I encounter the daily tasks of maintaining a household, I'm constantly wishing I had Maximo to help with the maintenance, upkeep and warranty records for my house. I mean who wouldn't want an automated work order generated directly to take care of all of the machinery around the house and implement preventive maintenance schedules?
Of course Maximo isn't for home use, but we created this campaign (click here) to see if we had any creative folks out there who were looking for 5 mins of fame at Pulse. We think that this will also be a good way to expand our social media presence and get the community more engaged. How many of you are following our blog ? Are you a member of our community? We continue to grow and are always posting the latest & greatest activities for Maximo.
Take a look at our latest video which I filmed on a local goat farm.........can you see the similarities to the CNA story?
I hope this has inspired you to create your own home video & submit it for your 5 mins of fame at Pulse. Reminder of the link.
With two weeks this weekend (edited 11/4/11) to pull your Pulse 2012 session proposal together, we thought it might be helpful to share some examples of abstracts from accepted proposals from last year. Keep in mind that this year's theme is Business Without Limits and we are seeking to understand how you gained visibility, control and automation to deliver better business outcomes. Scott Hebner talks a bit about our plans for Pulse 2012 in this video invitation, but let us know @ibmPulse if you have any questions. Don't forget to register during early bird registration by December 16 if you do not plan to speak at Pulse and attend the conference complimentary. Early Bird registration can save you up to $700 off registering onsite.

Future Security -- How Can We Keep up With the Ever-Advancing and Changing Threat Landscape?
As part of role in protecting IBM & SO clients, we focus on simple solutions, basics/first principles. This is even more true as cyber attacks become more sophisticated and more targeted - simple solutions are how we can provide the most comprehensive base solution, simple solutions that help motivate and enforce good behavior by our users. The reality is that every organization will get infected with malware - you are all infected statistically to at least 10% of your population. So your solutions must focus on minimizing opportunities for infection and then really minimizing opportunity for spread of infection/detection (teaser - this is where some of the advanced techniques such as our QRadar family really shine) and remediation of infection. Without the fundamental basis, the advanced solutions are like putting a bank-level security vault as your front door and a waxed-paper window covering beside it.
Join me along with Martin Borrett, Tom Cross, Jack Danahy and Josyula Rao on Tuesday March 6th at our Pulse session 2076 from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM in room 318 for a panel discussion sponsored by the IBM Institute for Advanced Security. We’ll be discussing research and approaches to help evolve security thinking to become more agile, de-perimeterized and business-process centric.
Heather Hinton, PhD
IBM Distinguished Engineer
When people ask me what Tivoli does or what is service management, my first impulse is to launch into this:
IBM Service Management represents an evolutionary leap forward in managing services. IBM Service Management provides the integrated Visibility, Control and Automation™ that you need across business and technology assets to help overcome roadblocks to innovation. It enables you to better achieve your business objectives and maximize the value from all of the assets that support your operation.
But its even easier than that. We do what any good business must: save customers time and money, while enabling them to delight their own customers. For instance, the gecko and the hairdo keep telling you every day of your life how easy it is to save with them. What they don't tell you is that those savings would be impossible without loads of data housed in systems run on software that organizes chaos to help make business sense. That's what we do. Of course, there is a lot more to the story and we hope you'll come to Pulse for the rest.
Here's a little something to dance in your head while you score holiday gifts online this season:
At Pulse, we're going to showcase what we do best. We're also going to bring brand new solutions, roadmaps for forthcoming development, sessions with domain experts and real human clients, and solution demos that show you how to save money and keep customers coming back to you.
We'll have some fun too. I'll tell you more about that later.
Pulse 2012 is March 4-7 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Early Bird registrationcan save you up to $700 but the offer expires on December 16.
Everywhere I look in Las Vegas during the IBM Pulse Conference, people are engrossed with their cell phones, iPads, or other mobile devices. While eating dinner, walking down the sidewalk, or waiting in line, more and more of our life is intertwined with the magic and draw of mobility power.
This year, the Pulse conference enables mobility lovers in several new ways:
Access the Pulse SmartSite anytime, anywhere to manage your Pulse agenda and activities via a web browser or HTML 5 web-enabled smartphone including Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry Storm2.
Check-in on FourSquare three times and receive a special gift from the User Community Networking area in the Pulse Solution Expo.
Visit and bookmark Pulse-related information quickly with QR codes used throughout signage and handouts during the conference. I recommend downloading mobile barcode reader software prior to Pulse if your phone doesn't already have an app.

In getting ready for Pulse 2011 I've been talking with folks from different IBM teams who will be at the conference on February 27 through March 2.
Maria ("Mary") Tafuri, Worldwide Program Director of the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program for IBM Tivoli Software, recently recapped for me what the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program is about and what her team will have going on at Pulse this year.
By way of introduction, Mary has been the Tivoli Accelerated Value Program Director since early 2010. She joined IBM in 1996, and has extensive experience in the areas of customer and product support, strategy planning, and business model initiatives. Mary also has worked as an IBM manager in a number of different countries and with many international clients, experience which serves her well in her current worldwide role.
Can you give me a quick refresher on the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program?
Mary: I'd be glad to! The IBM Software Accelerated Value Program is a technical advisory service that complements and enhances IBM's standard Subscription and Support. The program matches clients with an IBM Accelerated Value team of experts who partner with the client and deliver ongoing services -- on-site assistance, best-practice sharing, skill-building activities, and diagnostic coaching -- that maximize the client's software investment at all points along the life cycle of the software. In fact, the Accelerated Value Program's name comes from the fact that it helps clients accelerate from software purchase to software return-on-investment.
What will the IBM Accelerated Value Program have going on this year at Pulse?
Mary: We're pretty excited about what we have planned this year. First, we'll have an Accelerated Value Program Red Carpet Lounge located near the front of the Solution Expo hall where Accelerated Value clients can relax and check e-mail between sessions, and where IBM customers can learn about the Accelerated Value Program. And before everyone dives into the technical sessions starting on Monday morning, we hope they'll join us in the Accelerated Value Red Carpet Lounge for opening night VIP martinis on Sunday, February 27 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM.
Also in the Accelerated Value Red Carpet Lounge every afternoon from Monday, February 28 through Wednesday, March 2, we'll be hosting a series of technical sessions and discussions with Tivoli software experts covering all Tivoli product segments. These sessions will be a great opportunity for IBM customers to meet one-on-one with top Tivoli experts. Also, I will be holding an informal Q&A and discussion session from 4:30 to 5:30 PM on Monday afternoon, but I'll also be available at other times throughout Pulse -- just talk to one of us in the lounge to find a time that works for you.
I encourage attendees to stop by the Accelerated Value Lounge to check the schedule for sessions they're interested in. Also you can keep an eye on our IBMSoftwareValu Twitter feed before and during Pulse for session topics and times. Also, on a completely non-technical note, throughout Pulse we'll also be having random drawings and giving away gift cards to visitors at the lounge, just for the fun of it.
How can IBM customers learn more about the Accelerated Value Program?
