Hope the headline caught your attention! The messaging app made top news recently when Facebook announced it would acquire WhatsApp for $19 billion. WhatsApp runs on the IBM SoftLayer platform.
Cloudant also runs on SoftLayer. What is Cloudant? It is a privately held database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider that enables developers to easily and quickly create next generation mobile and web apps. IBM has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the company.
This news is especially relevant as IBM has also announced a $1 billion investment to deliver unique platform-as-a-service capabilities which connect enterprise applications and data to the cloud.

Cloudant lets developers do what they do best - develop!
Delivered as a managed service, Cloudant enables developers focus on what they do best - develop data-rich, engaging and scalable mobile and web apps. They don't need to be experts in database management or administration.
This is important. Data is transforming industries and professions; organisations today are challenging their developers to create the next generation of apps. And yet, developers are spending more time on database management. They need a more simple and flexible way to build apps -- which today are including a wide variety of both structured and unstructured data -- and these apps need to be accessed 24x7 and scaled to massive volumes of networks, users and devices.
Currently, about 18% of developers worldwide create cloud-based applications and that number is expected to rise to 67% percent or 12 million by 2019, according to Evans Research.
Cloudant also complements IBM’s Big Data and Analytics portfolio -- in which we have already invested more than $17 billion in 30+ acquisitions -- beyond traditional data management by providing a DBaaS that helps clients simplify and accelerate the development of scalable mobile and web apps. Cloudant will sit within IBM's newly formed Information and Analytics Group, led by Senior Vice President, Bob Picciano.
