The Developers Section
There are some great resources on XPages and Notes Development out there for people that wish to learn. In fact we have a whole wiki dedicated to Developing Applications in Lotus Notes Another great resource is OpenNTF.org communitt. Here you will find an enormous amount of ready to go applications, templates, components and more that you are free to use under Apache and GPL licence open source models.
There have been a couple of exciting development news from OpenNTF recently, namely the relational database support coming in Domino 8.5.3 and the forthcoming REST API's for Domino and XPages.
To get an understanding of the REST APIs you can listen to episode 136 of the Taking Notes podcast where Julian Robichaux and Bruce Elgort talk with IBMers Dave Delay and Phil Riand about the forthcoming REST API's for Domino and XPages about, What REST services are, What the XPages Extension Library is, How you can add REST capabilities to your XPages applications and much more. You can subscribe to the podcast here on iTunes.
There is also a great book called Mastering XPages that I can recommend, Mastering XPages, A Step-by-Step Guide to XPages Application Development and the XSP Language.
And speaking of Notes and Domino 8.5.3 here are the few of the new features found in the 8.5.3 code drop 5, that should make it into the final code thanks again for Darren Duke for compiling this list (also with the usual caveat that these features may not be in the final release product!)
- Full text sorting
- SCM is now built sort of integrated
- HTML 5 attributes added to XPages controls
- XPages preload applications at server startup time (whooooo)
- Code aggregation makes JS and CSS files much faster to load
- Dojo 1.5.0
- Much simpler L13N support
So good luck with your new found energy for developing Notes applications using XPages and if you are really feeling lucky you could enter thee XPages development contest below.
