Day 3 of the IBM Innovate conference kicked off with an incredible pair of keynote speeches from IBM Fellow Grady Booch and Inventor Dean Kamen. These are two visionary innovators, who are constantly inventing and inspiring.
First up, IBM superstar Grady Booch (pictured on the left) spoke. Have you heard of Grady? He co-developed the Unified Modeling Language. Grady presented an amazing array of innovative technologies coming from IBM Research that promise to power the technological transformation for decades to come. He delivered an overview of IBM’s highly respected Technology Outlook research, like Liquid Metal, neural engineering and membranes that can read DNA, that will shape our future in amazing ways. In his presentation Grady quoted Theodore Levitt who said, "CREATIVITY is thinking up new things. INNOVATION is doing new things." One of the new things Grady is demonstrated onstage was a demo of a SecondLife scrum using Rational Team Concert. Grady also wowed the crowd by showing all the Innovate activity going on in the Twittersphere. He actually showed a screenshot from Tweetdeck showing all the tweets and collaboration going in in real-time at the conference. Through the proliferation of data and social media Grady notes, "We can hear the planet talking to us".

The second keynote speaker was Inventor, physicist, and engineer, Dean Kamen, known for creating the Segway Personal Transporter, talked about his incredible innovations like portable energy systems, water purification for the developing world, and a prosthetic arm for maimed soldiers. Dean discussed his passion for using innovation and technology to solve the world’s most challenging problems and help the world's poor. Dean's passion, wit, vision and achievements inspired the audience, which responded with a resounding standing ovation.
