We often hear about the importance of developing a ‘BYOD’ (bring your own device) strategy. Yet many businesses prefer to take the approach that ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. For me, the whitepaper ‘Unlocking value in the BYOD era’ highlighted a great point on why this approach can have some serious business impacts.
Consider this. People have become so accustomed to using their smart devices, they will use them even if their company doesn’t support or even allow it. How? By turning to consumer technologies, which can lead to real issues around data security.
Of the smart phone users in your business, how many are forwarding corporate emails to their private inbox to view them on the go? How many are uploading sensitive documents to Dropbox so they can work on them at home? With no view or control over where your corporate information goes, there is a real risk of data leakage.
This is just one of the ways a failure to act in regards to BYOD can end up costing businesses. This whitepaper offers practical suggestions to help you get your strategy underway, or ensure your existing strategy is sufficiently robust. It also gives insight into how IBM tackled BYOD for our own environment.
