I have been working in the IT industry for almost 10 years, having had the opportunity to hold a diverse range of roles with a number of the world’s leading organisations. A common theme throughout this time has been my focus on performance management and analytics.
In reviewing IBM’s recent work with the coaching staff at the NSW Waratahs Rugby team, a similar focus on these two areas has facilitated for game changing outcomes.
When it came to predicting player injuries, the Waratahs Rugby team used to have to guess; but when IBM shared with them a model that helped them predict injuries with greater accuracy, analytics proved to be a game changer.
Now the Waratahs analyse data collected from several sources (like accelerometers players wear that measure intensity levels, collisions and fatigue) to anticipate and avoid injuries, and also to come up with specific regimens to better train individual players. Injuries were once an unavoidable reality of sports; now data-driven teams can prevent them for a competitive advantage.
The example It really serves to highlight to me how leaders at all organisations, irrespective of industry or size, are able now seizing upon data as the new basis of competitive advantage.
