Like many of us based in or visiting Sydney in May/June of this year, I was really taken-aback by the Vivid Sydney event. This unique annual event of light, music and ideas will be remembered by all those who experienced the mesmerising outdoor lighting sculptures and installations, the cutting edge contemporary music program, and the spectacular illumination of Sydney’s iconic architecture – most notably, the sails of the Sydney Opera House.
IBM were among the event collaborators at this year’s event, which provided an ideal platform to present the capabilities of our Big Data & Analytics solutions, in a unique and some would say, beautiful way.
In IBM ‘Heart of the City,’ we're collecting data via Wi-Fi enabled device signals at Vivid Sydney’s Light Walk. This data reveals patterns that can be used for future planning – patterns based on times of day, on visitor numbers, their dwell time, the direction they headed and the pace they traveled.
We then visualise those patterns and project them onto our ‘Heart of the City’ lighting sculpture. It reflects what’s going on at street level, and is a stunning example of data made clear, insightful, and yes, even beautiful.
Experience the beauty of real-time data at the IBM ‘Heart of City’ installation at the Vivid Sydney Light Walk for yourself by watching the following short video:
