This blog lists some interesting bits of information about the Sametime Instant Messenger which does not seem to be common knowledge among many IBM employees.
If for some reason Sametime isn’t working on your desktop, you could try the web version from the following link: IBM Sametime
Most frequently contacted
This can be accessed from the section at the bottom of your Sametime client, usually titled “Sametime Primary Contacts”. Click on the little triangle on the right to choose the option of displaying only the most frequently contact persons in your contact list.
Using Sametime outside of the IBM network
If, as an IBM employee, you want to use the capabilities of the Sametime client outside of IBM’s network, you can log on to the extst.ibm.com community and communicate with anyone else logged in to that community. All IBMers have access to that community. Also, and this sounds incredible to those hearing it for the first time, anybody (including non-IBMers) who has an IBM id (created from My IBM registration) can log in to that community using a Sametime client.
Scroll down to the section on “How to add a new community” if you need help with adding extst.ibm.com to your Sametime community servers list.
What do you do if Sametime is down?
Most employees would resort to emailing if they find out that they cannot login to messaging.ibm.com, IBM’s internal Sametime messaging community. A better idea would be to add another community and use that for communication instead. Some of the popular communities are:
extst.ibm.com (as mentioned above, you don’t need to be on the IBM network to be logged in here)
How to add a new community
In order to a new community, you need to follow the steps below:
1) Open Sametime Preferences.
2) Navigate to Server Communities, and click on “New Server Community”
3) In the window that opens, enter your server community details. The image below shows the details you’ll need to enter for the extst.ibm.com community. Ensure that your host server is specified correctly under the server tab.
4) Under the Log In tab, enter your Intranet login credentials, and you’ll be all set!
Using Sametime for Meetings
The Sametime client comes with capabilities for inviting participants to meeting rooms, in which slides and the presenter’s screen can be shared. You’ll need to ensure that you have the appropriate meeting room server configured in the Sametime client preferences.
For messaging.ibm.com, the meeting room server has the same hostname, with a port of 443 over HTTPS.
For ucnext.ibm.com, the meeting room server is ucmeetnext.ibm.com, port 443 over HTTPS.
