MDM and BPM: Integration and Governance for Extended Value

It was one of those warm calm nights, and I decided to have a hot fudge sundae. In that quiet time of enjoyment I began thinking about how good the ice cream tasted – as well as the hot fudge. Both were good! Then I thought about the clever person that first decided to merge them and create the hot fudge sundae, and realized that the enjoyment of that sundae went beyond that of the two separate ingredients. That simple scenario demonstrated the value of an integrated solution – as a way of gaining extended value.
An example of a similar scenario dealing with a technical and business environment would be the integration of Master Data Management (MDM) and Business Process Management (BPM). In this type of scenario, an enterprise can gain extended, and differentiating, value. MDM can provide data consistency to improve the integrity of business processes, making them more effective, and productive, and so extending their value. That consistent source of trusted data is what enables organizations to attain that elusive goal of what has come to be know as having a “single version of truth” in your data. After all, it makes sense to me that the decisions you make can only be as good as the data used to make them. So if your data is good, you can sit back and enjoy a feeling of extended confidence in the decisions you make! That’s a good feeling.
With BPM you have a process platform that can provide consistent visibility, collaboration, and governance. To help you make it all work there is the MDM Application ToolKit. The toolkit provides a suite of value-add capabilities, such as pre-built integration services. The drag and drop design makes it easier for you to develop business processes that run in IBM Business Process Manager.
Critical to making it all work, and keeping it working optimally, is data governance. By aligning MDM and BPM initiatives, and keeping them aligned with good data governance policies and procedures, you can optimize your business performance. To develop and maintain the environment requires a well thought out, developed, and managed data governance initiative – such as is represented by the integration of the relationships depicted in Figure 1.
