Day One of InterConnect was all about Big Data & Smarter Analytics. More than 2,500 of your colleagues attended Wednesday's Opening General Session to hear insights from IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty and special guests. Rometty was introduced by General Manger of ASEAN IBM Cornelia Chung, who cited the newly released IBM C-Suite study indicating that all C-levels regard technology and analytics as key components in driving business transformation. (If you haven't seen the study yet you can access it here. The results are being continuously referenced at InterConnect and you wouldn't want to be out of the loop...)
Rometty took the stage and started her keynote with a question: "What is the function of an enterprise?" She went on to outline the need for an organization to infuse intelligence into everything that it creates to deliver value to individuals before customer segments, as all business in this new environment must be customer-activated. In doing so, Rometty continued, we'll mark the end of average and the beginning of Smarter Enterprise. Rometty also stated that the social network is the new production line which demands transparency and authenticity through the smarter application of Cloud, Mobile, Social and Big Data & Analytics.
Ginni was joined by special guest Teo Chee Han, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, who provided his perspective on the innovation-driven economy (replacing the information-driven economy), and Tan Chong Meng, Group CEO of PSA International, who shared his best practices in leveraging data for changing industries such as trading ports.
After grabbing another cup of coffee and maybe a pastry or two, attendees filed in to the next General Session on best practices in becoming a (you guessed it) Smarter Enterprise. Let's face it. Everyone wants to become a Smarter Enterprise but what does that mean and how do you get there? As the C-suite study showed, the most pressing issue today may be how to partner with consumers to innovate. IBM executives and global leaders shared best practices on how Big Data & Analytics drive today's decision making. Mike Rhodin, Senior VP of IBM Software Solutions Group, and Cordelia Chung spoke with IBM clients from DBS Bank, Celcom Axiata Berhad and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore on becoming a Smarter Enterprise.
One more thing on that C-Suite study: Executives are increasingly recognizing the need to engage and collaborate with their customers, to the point of reaching out to them to help shape business strategy. See? The customer really is king! (No word yet on whether they get the corner office.)
As with all other IBM events, InterConnect did not disappoint on networking and receptions. Tuesday night was the Solution Center Welcome Reception, where attendees mingled while checking out the latest technology and cutting-edge solutions from IBM and IBM Business Partners. We were also treated to a special Dragon dance (just regular dragons, not the fire breathing kind). Check out event photos on our Facebook page! We've also posted some pics from the popular photo booth at the Social Playground.
Stay tuned for Day Two highlights!
