John Dunderdale, Vice President of Software, IBM Growth Markets, opened the inaugural InterConnect 2012, the largest IBM event ever held in Asia. InterConnect was attended by more than 2,500 people from 52 countries. InterConnect was created by IBM to help businesses and their management teams gain valuable knowledge about technology trends, news, and uses, and how to incorporate these new insights into their businesses for maximum effect.
One overriding theme of the morning session was how the explosion of data in the last few years presents unprecedented challenges, but also offers great opportunities for those who are prepared. Two other big issues were Smarter Commuting (enabling work to be done from anywhere at any time) and the announcement of IBM’s new PureData Systems.
Per Rod Adkins, Senior Vice President, IBM Systems & Technology Group, who gave an inspiring and enlightening presentation summing up the state of business today in an interconnected world, there are four mega-trends in the new era of IT:
These four big themes were then expounded on by other general session speakers. These speakers offered data, analysis and solutions that underscored how the mega-trends mentioned by Rod Adkins can paralyze an organization that is not prepared to meet the demands of this new era.
Highlighted speakers included:
Steve Mills, Senior Vice President and Group Executive, IBM Software & Systems, who discussed how exponential technology growth is creating challenges for businesses to deliver top results and how security concerns and huge costs of maintaining infrastructures make it critical for companies to focus more on innovation.
Rod Adkins, Senior Vice President, IBM Systems & Technology Group, who gave a highly-tweeted presentation on the emergence of social media and mobile devices and the consolidation of IT infrastructure.
Robert LeBlanc, Senior Vice President, IBM Middleware Software, Shared data that points to technology being the #1 factor that will affect the success of business in coming years and warned us to expect “turbulent change” in the near future.
Mike Rhodin, Senior Vice President, IBM Software Solutions Group, explained that the two most challenging issues for businesses will be Big Data and the ability to market to individuals through mobile devices and social media.
Jim Bramante, Senior Vice President, IBM Growth Markets, suggested businesses concentrate on growth and developing markets. These are attractive because they are not restrained by legal systems. The General Sessions offered additional insights that led to a steady flow of tweets by attendees and online users who followed the #IBMInterconnect hashtag.
General Session speakers included:
Business Partner General Session included:
Mariella Razetto, VP, SWG General Business, Business Partners & Geo Expansion, GMU and Jim Stallings, GM, Global Markets, Systems & Technology Group.
Dr. Michio Kaku, Physicist, futurist and popularizer of science, ended the general session on a lighter but high note with a bit of humor and a fascinating look into the future. He told the packed audience that the exponential growth of computing power will lead to inconceivable advances in our daily lives in the near future. The tweets were fast and furious as the day (and presentations) progressed. Here are a few comments tweeted by attendees and online followers of the Livestream:

After a full day of general sessions and opening keynotes that gave us much food for thought on the future of business and how organizations can thrive in today’s maze of technology changes, everyone was able to unwind a bit at the InterConnect Solutions Center Reception.
With more than 20 different vendor and solution pedestals at the Solutions Center Reception, there were plenty of opportunities to learn more about the latest technology solutions from IBM and its Business Partners, and even more opportunities to connect with other people at the event and ice cream (not to be outdone by technology!).
