As I mentioned in the IBM Cognos Dynamic Query Redbooks publication, the query service of Cognos Business Intelligence is powered by an eXtensible Query Engine (XQE) written in Java. It is not a coincidence that this eXtensibility is the first letter in the name (XQE) and top priority in the design. From the onset of its creation, the query service was mandated with adhering to the principles of extensibility and abstraction. These design principles have enabled us to deliver new value faster than ever before.
Here are some ways in which the capabilities of the query service were extended in version 10.2:
There are other extensions under development now, but note that this extensibility is not limited to projects in IBM Labs. External partners and customers are developing their own custom Java code to be processed by the IBM Cognos BI query service and called upon through report authoring and analysis gestures. Although official documentation and samples are not yet available, you can get started today. If you are interested in developing Java-based scalar, aggregate, or table functions that can be used in IBM Cognos BI reports, then reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll explain how you can get started.
