The difference between an upgrade versus a migration
Moving from IBM Cognos 8 to IBM Cognos 10 is an upgrade. The difference between an upgrade and a migration is significant. Upgrading software means moving to a new version of the software without changing platform but differences in reports may occur and testing and verifying the reports and looking for differences between the two software versions is important. Two upgrade approaches
Migrating from one software version to another means replicating applications from one platform to another. Changes to reports are significant and the migration is more complex than the upgrade.
There are two ways to upgrade to IBM Cognos 10: you can take the ‘big bang’ approach and do it all at once. Or, you can take a staged approach.
In the first approach, you can move all of your content quickly and efficiently by using IBM Cognos Lifecycle Manager
to compare and validate reports.
IBM Cognos Lifecycle Manager is a utility that automates the process of testing IBM Cognos BI report content for multiple environments. It validates, generates and then compares report output to ensure there are no differences in reports after upgrading or introducing any type of change to the software environment.
In the second approach, you can upgrade in stages by using IBM Cognos Multi-Version Coexistence
, which enables you to access both versions of the software through the IBM Cognos 10 portal; creating new content using IBM Cognos 10, while also serving up content from the previous software version.
A staged approach is useful when you have scarce resources that can be dedicated to the upgrade and when some users need to leverage new capabilities while others need to remain on the previous version of the software. The supported upgrade path
The supported upgrade path to IBM Cognos 10 is direct from IBM Cognos 8 or IBM® Cognos® ReportNet.There are two phases in the upgrade path.
In phase one, IBM Cognos 8 applications are upgraded and validated in IBM Cognos 10. The next step is to move to production and ensure users are receiving all of their report content exactly how they expect it. Users will see increased performance by the end of this phase.
In phase two, you can start leveraging the new capabilities of IBM Cognos 10 based on users requirements. You can use IBM Cognos Lifecycle Manager to validate both phases in the upgrade path. The basic upgrade workflow
Below is a template that you can use to plan and execute on your IBM Cognos 10 upgrade. This template is provided as a guide.
The upgrade workflow is divided into three key stages:
- Creating the plan
- Development and system testing
- Quality assurance, development and production
