I was hoping I could apply the second technique, but it does does not work against SAP BW hierarchies unless you have a DQM-enabled package. The tail() function apparently isn't supported for SAP BW hierarchies with the classic engine.

Thank you for this article. Approach #2 is helpful, since we do not have to hardcode the level name. This works great when the hierarchy is balanced. However, for an unbalanced hierarchy (where leaves are not at the same level) results of this approach can not be used. I am curious to see if you/anyone has managed to determine the lowest level in an unbalanced hierarchy in Cognos.

Thanks for the valuable information.

But I would like to know how can I use the ordinal information with the descendants function. Please see the example below.
Example:
I have hierarchy of 10 levels but the data is currently available only for 5 level. if I enable drill-up/drill-down, it will through all the levels. But i dont want to drill down if i don't have a data after a certain level.
Currently, I am using level 5 in my report and have freed the level 5 not to drill down and it is working fine.

But, I don't want to put level 5 in my report. I tried to get the number of level in a hierarchy as per your suggestion. it gives me ordinal value as 6 since i dont have any data after level 5. Based on this ordinal value, i tried to get the other level values using the expression as - descendants( root level, Ordinal value -1) but it gives me error as
"An invalid operand type for the MDQuerySpec operator 'descendants' was encountered."

Please suggest.

Manoj Gupta

I have installed Cognos 8 and Cognos 10 on my local machine. I want to run both the instances at the same time.

I changes the port numbers for gateway, dispatcher etc. on cognos 10 configuration so that I could run both the instances parallely.

But, despite of that also, I am still unable to do so. Could you please assist what sort of modification are required to make both instances running together.

Regards,
Manoj Gupta
