IBM recently made generally available WebSphere Application Server V8.5 (previously announced at IBM Impact 2012), which sets a new standard for application availability, developer productivity and quality of service delivered by application servers. The latest release improves developer productivity and enables more flexible development environments for a better overall experience. In addition, intelligent management capabilities improve application resiliency for higher availability and higher quality of service for all deployment models.
WebSphere Application Server V8.5 continues a 14 year tradition with these breakthrough advances. IBM WebSphere Application Server is ranked #1 overall in the latest Evans Data user satisfaction survey. (1) IBM also delivers unmatched capabilities and supports the latest programming models, and is the market leader with a 43.5% share in the Application Server Middleware Market. (2) Additionally, IBM WebSphere Application Server is the worldwide performance leader besting Oracle by 16% when compared on equivalent hardware using the industry standard SpecJ benchmark. (3)
With this release, all editions of WebSphere Application Server V8.5 include the new Liberty profile. The Liberty profile is a highly composable, fast to start, and ultra-lightweight profile of the application server that is optimized for developer productivity and web application deployment. It runs on various platforms including Mac OS and z/OS. This new profile is so lightweight that it can be installed and run on the $35 Raspberry Pi credit card sized computer (more at raspberrypi.org). It is a sub 50MB download and starts in a few seconds. In addition, this profile can be run as a production server. Check it out at wasdev.net.
Also, the new V8.5 release includes an enhanced WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment (ND) edition; featuring new Intelligent Management features and functionality.
