I often find myself facing a daily problem and thinking "I should find a better way of doing this", but after evaluating the work involved to build the solution, I decide to stay with the status quo. IBM's customers are no different. Customers know that to succeed, they need to get more out of their processes. The cost and challenges of deploying infrastructure, IT resources and ongoing administration can be too high for some customers to dive into Business Process Management.
In late-2013 IBM released BPM on Cloud built on SoftLayer. This offering is a ready-to-use BPM environment for process design, execution, monitoring and optimization. It provides a secure and scalable cloud-based environment managed by IBM that frees the customer team to focus on developing their processes. These process assets are 100% compatible with on-premises BPM and hybrid environments.
I recently had the opportunity to see BPM on Cloud in action at a prestigious university in North Carolina. The university library had a complex procedure for procuring and managing resources for their academic community. As one of the nation’s top ten private universities, the library systems needed to manage thousands of digital subscriptions. Their existing digital subscription procurement process consisted of email requests that touched many disconnected systems which generated an increased workload for the librarians due to missing information.
The university sought to automate the workflow for licensing data and handling the library's digital subscriptions. The goal was to provide a repeatable digital procurement process with a great user experience. And they wanted to get there quickly without new budget or capital expenses. They also wanted to do it without burdening their small IT team. That is where the benefit of a cloud environment shines, offering customers the advantage of speed, empowerment and economics.
The university selected IBM BPM on Cloud as their process solution to rapidly develop, test and deploy workflows. With this approach, the library and university staff can eliminate the need for hardware provisioning and reduce dependencies on specialized IT skills...And do it with speed.
The BPM on Cloud solution provided the university staff with a repeatable process that keeps users up to date with their tasks and delivers visibility with real-time dashboards. Using IBM’s cloud, we have been able to de-centralize the way the university tracks library materials and improves the quality of service we are able to deliver by being able to view the availability of books and other research assets in real-time,” said the University Librarian for Information Technology.
