Want Real-World Decision Management Conversation? Why IBM's Good Decision! Blog is the Place to Be

Recently IBM's Decision Management product marketing team launched the exciting new blog "Good Decision!" I had the opportunity to speak with three members of the editorial team: Cheryl Wilson, IBM Demand Program Manager, Vijay Pandiarajan, IBM Decision Management Product Marketing Manager, and Brett Stineman IBM WebSphere ILOG BRMS Product Marketing Manager, and find out how this blog is making a difference in the decision management marketplace.
Krista: First of all, what drove the decision to create this blog?
Cheryl: Sure. Two things drove the creation of this blog. First, we needed a flexible platform to provide relevant, real-time content to our customers and influencers. Secondly, there’s a lot to say about Decision Management – it’s getting more and more attention -- and we have a dedicated, passionate team who have a lot to say about it.
Brett: I would also add this: decision management is a concept that covers several different disciplines in several different ways. Good Decision! gives us a platform to talk about what's going on in this area from a broader IBM perspective. It allows us to bring experts together from different brand teams across different disciplines with diverse perspectives.
Cheryl: We also recognize that there’s some confusion around which technologies and methodologies fit into decision management. It’s an emerging concept or practice. And we hope that Good Decision! offers some meaningful insight and experience from actual practitioners that people can use.
Krista: Who is Good Decision's target audience? Who are your ideal readers?
Cheryl: First, we want to visitors to know that we intend to keep the content at a level where we're talking about real business challenges and issues around operational decision making. Sure, there will be some posts that focus on decision management technologies, but not at a deep technical level. The main intent is to discuss how these technologies align with business strategy. That said, we see our audience as being from both business and IT because decision management caters to that alignment and collaboration. Really, the audience is anyone who's interested in improving the timing and quality of those operational decisions that drive key business processes and applications.
Krista: So is the conversation around solving business challenges?
Brett: Yes. The idea behind this blog is to provide real-world examples. I mean, obviously, decision management solutions employ technology, but again, we're trying to focus on business outcomes and how to improve business outcomes using decision management. While we may touch on one or several technologies as it fits, we're not trying to make this a "developer's blog."
Vijay: What's neat about the blog is you have stories from a variety of industries from airline travel to government services to building bridges. The posts are little snapshots of real-world applications of decision management in industry.
Brett: We recognize there's more than enough technical content to go around (laughs).
Krista: Tell me about the exciting line-up of writers. What disciplines are represented on the blog?
Cheryl: We have a great representation – a core editorial team of experts from business rule management, business events processing, analytics and optimization. We also have regular contributors from our industry solutions team that are doing "industry beats,” writing on decision management challenges and opportunities within their industries. And we have someone from our services team, one of IBM’s Distinguished Engineers.
Brett: We’re taking the practitioner’s angle, from people directly involved in implementing these solutions in the field.
Cheryl: And our authors are passionate about operational decision making and customer success.
Krista: Which industries are represented?
Cheryl: Right now we have dedicated subject matter experts in banking, retail, government and insurance. And we have rotating guest bloggers from other important industries for decision management, such as Telecom, Travel and Transportation and Healthcare.
Krista: Can you give us a "sneak preview" of what hot posts you have coming up on Good Decision?
Cheryl: Yes, we have an industry post coming up around an interesting decision management application in government. We have one called "Bad Decisions: What to Do About Them?” and we have a commentary post in response to a recent Gartner blog entry headlined "’Rules Are for Losers’ -- Fact or Fiction?"
