Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP) or Mobile Application Development Platform (MADP)are terms coined by Gartner to describe an application development platform for mobile software. A MEAP addresses the evolving needs of application development, deployment and lifecycle management for mobile apps, in addition, this platform also addresses the needs related to data mobilization from Line of Business (LoB) systems.
The MEAP market has evolved over the past few years. Ubiquity of devices, varieties of development platforms, changing and challenging needs for mobile software development, deployment and lifecycle management all this have created a market for MEAP solutions. The market relevance of MEAP solutions has grown so much so that Gartner have created a Magic Quadrant for MEAP vendors.
Ed Brill’s blog post on IBM’s leadership in MEAP is worth a read. In his blog, Ed has elaborated on IBM’s MEAP solution and its constituent products.
Should I invest in a MEAP solution?
Gartner attempts further help with the decision making with what they call as the “Rule of Three” concept. According to Gartner, an enterprise should consider a MEAP solution for their enterprise mobility solutions when they would need to:
Looking at the rule of three, we see that MEAP not only addresses the device ubiquity but also addresses the key need of data mobilization, data that is on premise or on cloud. This goes without saying that connectivity and integration also forms a key tenet to MEAP solution.
What are the integration needs when implementing a MEAP solution?
IBM Cast Iron Cloud Integration addresses this key need on IBM's Mobile First Platform, a simple mobile application scenario that leverages enterprise data from LoB systems using IBM MEAP solution or the Mobile First platform, is described in this article.
