This is an exciting day in the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) history. Today, IBM officially announced a new developer friendly light-weight web app server called WAS V8.5 - Liberty Profile and a set of WAS ND enhancements that reset the bar on app server resiliency for mission critical applications. Driven by input from customers and business partners, these new
solutions improve developer productivity, ease of use and help provide exceptional service levels for your end users.
A remarkable team of IBMers made it possible to announce these major enhancements at the upcoming Impact event and make them generally available June 15, 2012.
The Liberty profile is a small (<50MB download) and fast (<5 second start) app server focused on web, OSGi and mobile applications. Rather than being static, the dynamic server profile uses the configuration to determine what features are required by your application and invokes only them. Additional developer focused features include eclipse tooling; an archive install and deploy; support for MAC OS development; and fidelity with the full WAS profile. (Check it out and participate at www.wasdev.net.)
The second major announcement of the day is enhancements to WAS ND V8.5 that deliver new levels of resiliency to the already highly available app server. Today, there is a new bar set for Intelligently Managing your app server environments. Within WAS ND V8.5, you get Application Edition Management, Autonomic Health Management, Dynamic Clustering and Intelligent Routing, working in tandem to ensure your applications provide the service levels end users expect for critical applications. You may recognize these capabilities from our previously separate product called WebSphere Virtual Enterprise. Starting with WAS ND V8.5, these Intelligent Management capabilities are included as part of WAS ND at no additional charge. (For an overview that was presented today click here )
These are two major announcements that set the WAS portfolio apart and continue to drive the broadest range in choice of application server solutions in the industry – and the best fidelity across editions. However, there is much more to WAS V8.5 like:
