The WAS V.8.5 Alpha release, announced October 6, 2011 (see blog post on wasdev.net), makes it possible for developers & organizations to deliver web-apps faster, improving competitiveness and profitability.
WebSphere Application Server V 8.5 Alpha introduces a new, lightweight profile of the application server for web apps, along with a simplified configuration for development environments.
This alpha allows you to develop in a light-weight environment, but ultimately deploy (unchanged) to a variety of WAS platforms.
