In May of 2013, IBM announced Smarter Process to 9,000 people at our Impact conference as an approach for reinventing business operations to be customer-centric and help clients create instant, seamless and insightful experiences for their customers. Less than a year later, I am delighted that our customers, business partners and analysts are applauding our approach, naming us an industry lead.
In this month’s release of IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Business Process Platforms 2014 Vendor Assessment (IDC #247683, April 2014) IBM received the high marks in capabilities as compared to the other vendors. Our strength in collaborative design, feedback tools and outstanding decision automation were highlighted as capabilities that put us in front of the pack.
The positive feedback from analysts such as IDC is a wonderful confirmation of our approach and we see it repeatedly borne out in the continued success of our customers.
Another example, is simplifying the permitting process for citizens in the public sector. At the State of Alaska, Smarter Process was brought in to resolve a backlog of permit authorizations that had plagued the state for the past 20 years, inconveniencing citizens and leading to missed revenue opportunities. Facing a mandate from the state legislature to fix the problem within two years, the division sought a solution that would streamline its processes and eliminate the backlog once and for all. The state engaged IBM to create an agile Smarter Process environment using a 14-week Quick Win Pilot and IBM Blueworks Live and IBM Business Process Manager Advanced software. The manual, paper-based processes were automated and the backlog of authorizations accumulated over 20 years was eliminated.
I’m convinced that the IBM Smarter Process approach will continue to help our clients’ transform their businesses and we’re committed to investing in the capabilities in our portfolio to make it even better. The future holds much promise for Smarter Process as we continue to expand our capabilities in Cloud, Social, Mobile and Big Data. Be sure to watch for announcements coming from Impact 2014 for the next chapter in the Smarter Process story.
