IBM refers to the HCLS operating environment not as an industry but, rather, an ecosystem, because of its vast scope of enterprises and constituents, including virtually every other industry type in whole or in part. Perhaps the only constant in this mix is the centrality of the patient, a.k.a. consumer; although the ecosystem stakeholders appear to forget this principal from time to time; and particularly its characteristic of continuous change to maintain homeostasis. This biological basis, together with the legislated and regulated need for privacy and security with respect to so-called protected health information (PHI) and individually identifiable information (IHI), implies the need for continuous and real-time operation throughout the ecosystem, which in turn implies the need for the IT non-functional requirements of continuous access, reliability, scalability and security.
Transformation currently underway in the HCLS ecosystem is characterized by three major trends: evolution of care delivery, ecosystem convergence and consumerism. All of these require information access and analytics, and also business process modernization to succeed. Tomorrow’s healthcare ecosystem will have these characteristics.
