Geolocation based services are a popular way to network with people while sharing where you are and what you are doing. Many people use social networks like Twitter to broadcast not only what they are doing but where they are doing it. Now smart phones have enabled us to take this one step further and geo-tag tweets and other types of content like photos and video for real-time networking at events. There are many popular platforms and smart phone apps that enable conference attendees to connect and share in conversations and social media.
The possibility for conference serendipity is amplified through geolocation aware networking. At Impact 2011, we encourage everyone in attendance to use Foursquare to check-in to locations around the conference. When you check-in you will be able to unlock a new level of information about the conference and the people around you. Attendees can share their Check-in via Twitter and Facebook status messages and the location will appear along with any photos or commentary added to the message. Check-ins allow you to see who is in the same physical space and connect with them directly with comments, twitter and facebook profile information. Check-ins also give you the opportunity to discover information shared by others in the form of "tips." Tips can be check off much like a to-do list for a location. For example, Business partners exhibiting in the Impact Solution Center can use the Foursquare application to add tips about their demos and offering to reach interested attendees. Maybe you want to coordinate dinner plans with colleagues. Perhaps you will find a speaker and discuss topics you want to learn more about after a session.
Attendees gain more networking opportunities with an enhanced ability to share conference information in real-time. As you navigate the conference you can earn Specials at certain events. Bring your smart phone to redeem specials at the Social Lounge in Veronese 2504 and pick up custom badge buttons for each special. Special event locations include General sessions, Mini Main Tents, Unconference and All Star Tweetup. You can browse all locations online and on your phone - your GPS enabled smart phone will show you the way. If you complete a tour of Impact with any three check-ins, you can pick up the "Mover and Shaker" button. We know Impact attendees will benefit from extending the conversation with Foursquare.
