Events like Lotusphere are always exciting, busy, energizing affairs. I look forward to meeting with clients and business partners. Getting out of the office and into the marketplace is all goodness for a marketer. But no matter how good the conference, inevitably the presentations all start to look like this after a while (from WorkFailBlog).

Preparing for Lotusphere this evening I thought I'd share a story for Business Partner Tuesday.
Two things happened today. I needed to regain control over my iPhone 3GS - no ring control. And the company formerly known as Facetime is now called Actiance.
Why are these two events related? Well...during the day I read about "Actiance" and this evening I was driven to purchase the iPhone 4 because of "Facetime". Driven. A functioning mute button before LS OGS is a good thing. Of course a working 3GS (one that hadn't taken a couple nose dives down a marble stair case, skidded across parking lots) could have done that trick. But while I'm out buying a replacement phone...I might as well get the latest :), fastest, and as John touted in his tweet yesterday about his new iPhone 4 - most amazing resolution.
Truth be told at the end of it - it was "Facetime" that got me to buy the iPhone 4 vs simply a replacement 3GS. What new Mac convert could resist when you just might have a chance to see your kid's face on your phone? Video was the key differentiator for me. Talk about the best marketing strategy ever....market expansion...kids, grandmas...traveling parents...it's not just the email and internet access anymore driving the device purchase. It is also "remote" family members and friends "closer" in "real-time video". Video. Voice. Video. We have been hearing about video a lot haven't we in our own market space? This entire generation might grow up with it being as common as a voice chat.
Another trend we are seeing is a lot of companies renaming their products (or in this case themselves).
This year marks a new tradition at Lotusphere.
Today you heard our exciting
and DETAILED preview of UCC at Lotusphere, led by our new
Executive Caleb Barlow. If you want to get jazzed up for Lotusphere,
I strongly recommend you hit the link above in blue. It is a great
broadcast chock-full of information.
In addition to those sessions
described, I'm excited to introduce the Sametime Blog Community to
the first of a new tradition -- The Ask the Product Managers Session
with a panel of product management team members ready to take on your
Lotusphere attendees asked us if there
could be a way to interact with the product management team in the
same way they have lab and session access the development team. At
Lotusphere 2011, for the first time, the answer is yes! Please mark
your calendars and join my colleagues and me as we answer all the
“other questions” you have.
What: Ask The Product Managers at
Where: Swan Ballroom 5-10
When: Thursday, February 3 -- 11:15 AM
to 12:15 PM
Abstract: By popular demand, and
finally here for Lotusphere 2011, is the new "Ask the Product
Managers" panel. The Lotus Notes and Domino, Lotus Sametime,
Lotus Quickr, Lotus Connections, WebSphere Portal, and IBM LotusLive
product teams will be on hand to answer your questions about product
strategy, market positioning, licensing and pricing, roadmaps,
integration, and more! We'll let you save your tough technical
questions for the "Ask the Developers" panel to follow, but
we welcome those questions you could never quite figure out who to
ask! This lively session promises to provide new insights, ideas and
of course -- entertainment.
So please join my product management colleagues and me, grab some lunch, and then join the developers before the general closing session.

If things have been a little quiet on The SametimeBlog of late, chalk it up to all the preparations underway for what we hope will be the best Lotusphere ever. And part of that experience is Lotusphere Online, which has just gone live (link to the Lotusphere Blog for more details). Of course, we've included Sametime 8.5.1 as a key part of the online experience, so you'll be able to connect with colleagues via the web client, and (coming very soon) if your Sametime deployment supports multiple communities, we'll provide the instructions on how you can connect your Sametime Connect rich client to the Lotusphere Online Sametime community server.
***UPDATE 01/23: as you can see from our Comments, a video tutorial for LSOnline is now available on Planet Lotus (thanks, Chris).*****
And for those of you who aren't able to attend in person, you can participate virtually like never before. Sign up for and watch the IBM Lotusphere Social Media Aggregator. You'll be able to see Live Stream videos of key general sessions, read the online chatter from Twitter, blog posts, Flickr photos, videos posted to YouTube, and much more. And you can also join the discussion in the LinkedIn Group for Lotusphere.
And here on The SametimeBlog and our sister blog, The Collaboration Soapbox, will have ongoing tips and tricks on how to use the various social tools we'll have onsite. So join us, live and/or virtually, for what will be the most social Lotusphere yet.
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the new Sametime 8.5 Enterprise Scale Deployment Redbook. It provides a best practice framework for medium to large enterprise-scale deployment of Sametime 8.5.1. This Redbook covers a range of business collaboration requirements that typically can be found within many large enterprises with geographically dispersed user communities and diverse business requirements for real-time collaboration.
You can access the Redbook through the link below. A printable PDF version will be available soon.

Happy New Year to those on the Western Calendar! Catching up from a little time off, I see a couple of news items from last week of note you might be interested in.
No Jitter published an article ("Decoding 'Collaboration for realistic decision-making") on collaboration: what it is, how it affects businesses, and building a unified communications roadmap. IBM Quickr is mentioned specifically as a means of an information repository or shared workspace:
In many cases, there is also a need for an information repository or shared workspace, using enterprise tools such as Microsoft SharePoint, IBM Quickr, or dozens of other collaboration products; in those cases, the communications tools are being built into, or tightly integrated with, those collaborative workspaces.
And within the broader coverage of Avaya's recent announced enhancements to its Avaya Agile Communication Environment, many articles (such as this one from UC Strategies) including mention of the support for IBM Sametime and Lotus Notes. A similar piece from Network World also had this to say:
As for IBM environments, there's a packaged application to embed voice in the latest release of IBM Lotus Notes and Sametime. Employees can click-to-call and see telephony presence from within Lotus Release 8.5.1 while using deskphones from Avaya or other vendors. – Network World
