|Session 1: Tools and Strategies for Developing and Refreshing Business Applications on IBM i,|
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 – 2 p.m Eastern time, 11 a.m. Pacific time
Today’s IT challenges are to deliver application services faster, with higher quality, and with superior economics. And as businesses respond to these challenges by leveraging existing and new applications, they face a rapidly changing set of options for development platforms, web technologies, programming languages, and modernization tools. IBM i developers are uniquely positioned to take advantage of new technologies -- like WebSphere® and PHP™ -- while capitalizing on their existing application investments in RPG® and other traditional languages. Alison Butterill will review the latest industry trends for IBM i application development and modernization, including IBM Rational® development and collaboration tools. Mike Pavlak will share the latest news from Zend™ and Susan Gantner will give her perspective of what's hot in IBM i development shops.

|Session 2: Power up your analytics with strategies to modernize Query/400 reports |
Tuesday, November 8, 2011 —- 2 p.m. Eastern time, 11 a.m. Pacific time
For many IBM i clients, Query/400 has been the tried and true report writer to deliver information for analysis purposes. Modernizing that reporting environment provides many benefits, including better performance, better management tools, self service ad-hoc reporting in real time - all while removing a dependency on IT to deliver that information. For some, the data warehouse might be the answer. For others that don't have the budget or bandwidth, something in between may fit the bill - however, for ALL, creating (and executing) a Query/400 modernization strategy based on DB2® for i solutions is the answer! This session will cover several modernization strategies and solutions that are optimized for IBM i.
- Doug Mack - DB2® for i Business Analytics Consultant, IBM Lab Services

IBM has announced new workload-optimized POWER7® systems, including a performance boost to the Power 750 -- the same server used in Watson, the Jeopardy! winner -- that provides even faster processing capability than each machine used in the computer genius. The new Power blades and upgraded Power servers are built to manage the world's most demanding emerging applications, used in healthcare management, financial services, scientific research and more.
IBM Power Systems incorporate a number of unique technologies for the specialized demands of new applications and services. In addition, the systems enable clients to manage current applications and services at less cost with technology breakthroughs in virtualization, energy savings, more cost-efficient use of memory, and better price/performance. Here are some highlights of the new announcement:
New and enhanced Power Systems products include:
- The new 16-core, single-wide IBM
BladeCenter® PS703 and 32-core, double-wide IBM BladeCenter PS704 blade
servers, which give clients an alternative to sprawling racks. The PS704
delivers 60-percent faster performance with twice the number of cores
while using the same amount and space and energy as previous POWER7
blades. The new POWER7 blades support massive server consolidation with
- The enhanced IBM Power 750 Express, the
same system that powers Watson, now further optimized for the most
challenging analytics workloads. The Power 750 has been upgraded with
several options, including a faster POWER7 processor that offers more
than three times the performance of comparable 32-core servers, such as
Oracle's SPARC T3-2 server, and more than twice the performance of HP's
Integrity BL890c i2. (2)
- The enhanced IBM Power 755, a high-performance computing cluster node with 32 POWER7 cores and a faster processor.
IBM also introduced a new Systems Director Management Console
appliance that allows data center administrators to operate both Power
servers and blades with a unified, intuitive interface for physical and
virtualized system resource management.
IBM is extending technology from the acquisition of BLADE Network
Technologies (BNT) across its portfolio of workload-optimized systems,
including high performance top-of-rack BNT switches with VMready network
virtualization and BLADEHarmony management software. These IBM BNT
RackSwitch products will, for the first time, be closely integrated with
IBM Power servers to support workloads such as cloud computing,
financial services, Web 2.0, streaming video, medical and scientific
research and business analytics. According to a recent report by The
Tolly Group, the newest IBM BNT switch demonstrated significant
performance and energy efficiency advantages over comparable switches,
including an average of 55 percent better price and performance. (3)
IBM also announced additions to its Intelligent Cluster line of
energy-efficient, high-performance computing platforms -- pre-integrated
solutions that build upon its rack servers including BladeCenter or
iDataPlex platforms. These new offerings allow customers -- in segments
such as financial services and energy exploration, for example -- to
build HPC configurations that can reduce power and cooling costs by up
to 50 percent. The new Intelligent Cluster offerings include:
- New platforms updated with the latest Intel Xeon processor E7 family;
- New 10Gb Ethernet solutions that can enhance performance of HPC workloads by leveraging up to 11 times lower latency (3);
- A new InfiniBand solution for Intelligent
Cluster that features integrated ethernet gateway to eliminate the need
for a separate ethernet switch to help optimize workloads such as

Smarter computing for a smarter planet. Join IBM for the launch of an entirely new category of computing, expert integrated systems
On April 11th, you're invited to join IBM
online for the launch of an entirely new category of computing, expert integrated systems. IBM will be introducing expert integrated systems featuring both hardware and software solutions. This new computing category is expected to help change the way you deploy, manage and fund IT.
Some of us know all too well how painful IT-related challenges can be. Sometimes it seems that every project is underfunded with limited resources to make it all work. With overburdened budgets and staffs that can mean that precious time is wasted . Organizations can spend billions of dollars on maintenance instead of innovation. IBM has heard from, you, our customers, that it was time to fundamentally rethink how we design and build systems. That's why we've been working to develop expert integrated systems to offer a solution that offers the flexibility of a general-purpose system with the simplicity of an appliance.
We're hoping that new integrated systmes designed by IBM
can get you up and running in as little as a few hours, cutting months off deployment times of new application projects. It’s all based on patterns of expertise, that you deploy as quickly and easily as you download and use apps on a smartphone. IBM's goal is to help customers acheive faster system set-up and application deployment time. Register for our virtual event to get all the details
and bring your questions. We want to hear from you!
We've heard consistently from our customers that one thing that is really valuable to them is the ability to test drive IBM products and solutions. That's why we're making a demonstration of IBM Systems Director available to our customers. IBM Systems Director offers a central point of control for all IBM resources in
the data center—simplifying the entire IT process. Combining IBM Systems
Director with IBM Tivoli creates a unified platform approach to systems
management for a fully integrated IT system. Click here to sign-up for a demo now.
Two exclusive demos, Express and Standard Editions, are available for online demonstration.
The online demos show how Systems Director can be an integrating force in
your data center. Each demo includes topics such
as deployment, capture, grouping, monitoring, cost calculation, power capping
and much more.
Does your organization face challenges with:
• Monitoring and repairing systems?
• Deploying and optimizing
• Planning and documenting your IT infrastructure?
You can sign-up for the demo, and listen any time from the comfort of your office, at your convenience. If you check out the demos, leave a comment here on the blog and tell us what you think!
