This past weekend, we had the great opportunity to visit the West Lake in Hangzhou. Hangzhou is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province (larger than Jiaxing!). We had to get out on the road early to take full advantage of the whole day. The day started out rainy, which seemed bad, but as we drove towards our destination, we realized that it is desired to be in the West Lake during the rain.
Our interns told us about the story of Lady White in Hangzhou. To avoid getting the details incorrect, I thought I'd share a link to the details of the story instead of being too brief with the details: http://www.seeraa.com/china-culture/baishezhuan.html. In summary, Lady White started following Xu Xian, when it started to rain. As the rain fell, Xu Xian approached her and introduced himself. It was love at first sight. They then got married and opened a medicine shop, which is today's widely-famous Bao He Tang(保和堂, Harmony Preservation Hall). This love story is very famous and explained why despite the rain, there were many, many people on the west lake that day.
The west lake was a sight to see. The gardens were fabulous and the lake itself was breathtaking. We could see why it was a popular destination for tourists. Here are some of the images from the day:
This last photo was a sign after all the great food we've been eating Once the rain stopped, some members of the team took this sign one step further and rented some bicycles to checkout even more of the West Lake area.
Overall, it was a great day. Glad that we didn't miss out on seeing this great city. Until next time
