I'm glad to see IBM doing this, but if they really want to draw in the developer crowd, take a look at what the competition is doing! Salesforce $1 Million Hackathon http://events.developerforce.com/dreamforce/hackathon - At the end, not only did they give away $1M, they actually have away $2M because there was controversy around the winner. Grant it, this is easier for Salesforce to do because Dreamforce is in San Francisco so they are surrounded by developers who can just walk over to the Moscone Center. Still, the millions aside, the way Salesforce catered to their developer ecosystem was amazing. There were free giveaways of any developer books people wanted (a huge library where people lined up to fill their backpacks), hands-on lab exercises every 30 minutes with a rotating exercise schedule, ask the expert booths, a teaching theatre with a rotating schedule and more. I'd love to see IBM invest the same way.
