Recently Lotus Notes has been making some big headlines because of its association with a very unlikely user: Howard Stern. When Stern was asked if he wanted a pre-Palm, he declined because it doesn't work with Lotus Notes. According to website JK on the Run, "Who would have suspected that Stern is totally dependent on Lotus Notes in his work? He’s not the big technical geek you expect to be into Notes but apparently that is the case. After the brief exposure to the Palm Pre Stern has indicated it’s not for him as it doesn’t talk to Lotus Notes. Instead he wants a BlackBerry Bold to replace his aging Treo. Palm couldn’t have foreseen this but it’s not the outcome they were hoping for, that’s for sure."
After Stern revealed his preference for Lotus Notes, a netcast called "This Week in Technology" was taunting Howard Stern over his use of Lotus Notes. Seems that some commenters, namely broadcasters Leo Laporte, Jeff Jarvis, and Gina Trapani had a nice laugh over Howard Stern's use of Lotus Notes. Well, Howard responded on-air and took Jeff Jarvis to task. Howard Stern felt so strongly about it that he invited IBM Lotus Vice President Jeff Schick onto his show to discuss why Howard has made the right choice, and to explain how Howard and the Howard Stern show use Lotus technologies.
Lotus Vice President Jeff Schick of IBM, responded to all the buzz in the blogosphere about how Howard Stern uses Lotus Notes. According to Schick the Howard Stern show digitizes everything — every show, every bit of audio, every press clipping, even everything sent into the show. They scan all the fan mail. This adds up to 100 terabytes of data. That’s stored at Howard’s office in New York (outside Sirius) — which is in addition to the audio that’s stored, of course, at Sirius (and backed up in New Jersey), and in addition to the video archives. Howard’s own 100tb is backed up at Howard’s beach house. Howard’s office has a T1 and business-class cable and a direct link to Howard’s apartment, which also has business-class cable, like his beach house (which has CAT5 cable in every all and multiple wi-fi networks for Howard and guests). Like millions on Lotus Notes users, Howard Stern knows that Lotus can house all his data, plus do email. But he's not the only one who uses Lotus Notes for his business.
At my previous company (Candle), we used Lotus Notes for our internal training databases, plus our company email. As an email tool, it was not a target for Viruses as some other tools on the market were.
