The all-volunteer community working under the Apache Software Foundation announced the availability of Apache OpenOffice 4.0 on July 23. As the leading open source alternative to MS Office, OpenOffice meets the needs of many businesses seeking to avoid unnecessary and expensive upgrades to MS Office 365. With the impending end-of-service for MS Office 2003 in April 2014, IT leaders are examining their alternatives.
With robust application development APIs, IBM Business Partners may extend and customize OpenOffice in many ways. Apache OpenOffice 4.0 implements new sidebar panels for managing extensions among other task-specific edit controls. IBM Lotus Symphony source code has been integrated in Apache OpenOffice 4,0 enabling this innovative user experience. New IBM extensions coming later this summer will extend Apache OpenOffice directly to IBM SmartCloud Engage and IBM Connections, enabling social document workflows with IBM Docs. IBM is announcing enterprise service and support for large scale deployments of Apache OpenOffice creating new opportunities for Business Partners to engage and offer their services.
