IBM Announces New Capabilities to Deliver Real-Time Analytics via the Cloud
IBM recently announced new IBM SmartCloud capabilities, including DB2 with BLU Acceleration that can result in as much as 25 times faster reporting and analytics, and SmartCloud availability for SAP's in-memory database, the SAP High Performance Analytics Appliance (SAP HANA).
New BLU Acceleration technology from IBM Research and Development labs adds innovative Dynamic In-memory analytics to DB2 database software on IBM SmartCloud to help companies and governments tackle Big Data by making it dramatically simpler, faster and more economical to analyze massive amounts of data. For example, Cognos Business Intelligence with Dynamic Cubes powered by DB2 with BLU acceleration delivers speed of thought analytics – with 18 times faster data loading and 14 times faster answers.
IBM also announced that its open IBM SmartCloud, built on decades of hosting experience, is now available for SAP HANA. The new offering includes a physical SAP HANA Appliance on IBM SmartCloud for SAP Applications, hosted on SmartCloud Enterprise+. In addition, a virtual SAP HANA Appliance is now available on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise (SCE) for early stage development and test.
IBM Unveils New Technology to Connect a Smarter Planet
IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy took a major technological step forward recently with the introduction of IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.
Over the next 15 years, the number of machines and sensors connected to the Internet will explode. has completed the acquisition of the software portfolio of Star Analytics,
Inc., a privately held business analytics company headquartered in Redwood City, California. Financial
terms were not disclosed.
The combination of IBM and
Star Analytics’ software will further advance IBM's business analytics
initiatives allowing clients to easily access financial information stored in
their applications, allowing them to make more informed decisions faster.
Star Analytics software
addresses a rising challenge for organizations -- helping to automatically
integrate essential information, reporting applications and business analytics
tools across their enterprises, on premise or from cloud computing
environments. The software removes typical custom coding for specialized
sources that are hard to maintain, and eliminates manual processes that are
cumbersome and time consuming.
"Applying analytics to
a wide range of data requires organizations to democratize and speed sharing of
critical information across an enterprise," said Les Rechan, IBM General
Manager, Business Analytics. "Star Analytics’ software advances IBM’s
efforts to deliver analytics that span all data sources directly into the hands

Star Analytics’ software,
combined with IBM's R&D and prior acquisitions in business analytics
including Varicent, Algorithmics, Clarity Systems, OpenPages and Cognos, and
recent investments in predictive analytics such as SPSS, will provide clients
with a broad range of business analytics solutions. These acquisitions are
part of IBM's larger focus on analytics, which spans hardware, software,
services and research.
The news supports IBM's
long-term growth strategy to expand the company’s business analytics and
optimization software and services capabilities, an area of IBM's business that
is expected to reach $20 billion in revenue by 2015.
IBM has established one of
the world’s deepest portfolios of analytics and big data technologies and
industry expertise, including almost 9,000 dedicated business analytics and
optimization consultants, and 400 researchers. Nearly 500 of the patents

Deutsche Telekom and IBM
recently announced a collaboration to provide an integrated solutions portfolio
that enables cities to make smarter use of their services through intelligent
data capture and analysis. The Smarter Cities solutions will build on IBM's
expertise from thousands of smarter city engagements combined with Deutsche
Telekom's global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) capabilities, which include M2M
solutions integration and advanced network connectivity.
The M2M communication
technology facilitates the automated exchange of information between terminal equipment
such as machines, vehicles and containers or with a central control center –
creating an inter-connectivity often referred to as the “Internet of Things.” By
using sensors embedded in a wide array of systems serving the public -- such as
a traffic lights, public transport vehicles or parking spaces -- M2M technology
can report on the status of the system being monitored via the Internet in
real-time. Combining this technology with IBM’s Smarter Cities expertise will
enable intelligent, real-time decision-making allowing for services such as
intelligent traffic management, route optimization, bus or train arrival
prediction, and parking space management.
