Open Source Robotics Foundation Chooses SoftLayer, an IBM Company, to Host First Cloud-Based Robotics Challenge
The Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), the non-profit organization charged with supporting the development, distribution and adoption of open-source software for use in robotics research, education and product development, recently relied on SoftLayer Technologies to host the DARPA Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC). SoftLayer, now an IBM company, provided the multi-faceted infrastructure of bare metal, cloud and high-performance GPU servers to help push the boundaries of robotics technology. OSRF was funded by DARPA to support the simulator-based event, part of the broader DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC).
Competitors in the VRC sought to develop software to enable a simulated robot to execute tasks similar to the activities that might be required of emergency personnel in a disaster response situation. The VRC drew more than 100 teams from around the world, and SoftLayer’s uniquely customizable cloud platform allowed them to compete from remote locations. The winners of the virtual competition will move on to the next stage of the DRC, in which the software they tested during the VRC will be applied to physical robots during a live event.
IBM recently announced that it has completed the acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies Inc., a privately held cloud computing infrastructure company based in Dallas, Texas. On June 4, IBM announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire SoftLayer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
SoftLayer joins IBM’s new cloud services division, which combines SoftLayer with IBM SmartCloud into a global platform. The new division, led by General Manager James Comfort, will provide a broad range of choices to both IBM and SoftLayer clients, ISVs, and channel and technology partners.
“Cloud computing provides a profound and transformative change in business and government,” said Comfort at IBM. "With SoftLayer in IBM’s portfolio, it will be easier and faster for organizations to adopt game-changing cloud services.”

Big Data Helps City of Dublin Improve its Public Bus Transportation Network and Reduce Congestion
IBM recently announced it is helping the City of Dublin use Big Data to identify and solve the root causes of traffic congestion in its public transport network throughout the city, which means improved traffic flow and better mobility for commuters. Integrating data from a citywide network of sensors with geospatial data means that city officials are able to better monitor and manage traffic in real time.
The Dublin City Council (DCC) delivers housing, water and transport services to 1.2 million citizens across the Irish capital. To keep the city moving, the council’s traffic control center works together with local transport operators to manage an extensive network of roads, tramways and bus lanes.
In a collaboration with IBM researchers, its road and traffic department is now able to combine Big Data streaming in from an array of sources – bus timetables, inductive-loop traffic detectors, and closed-circuit television cameras, GPS updates that each of the city’s 1,000 buses transmits every 20 seconds – and build a digital map of the city overlaid with the real-time positions of Dublin’s buses using stream computing and geospatial data.
Deutsche Telekom and IBM Collaborate
to Help Build Smarter Cities
Deutsche Telekom and IBM
recently announced a collaboration to provide an integrated solutions portfolio
that enables cities to make smarter use of their services through intelligent
data capture and analysis. The Smarter Cities solutions will build on IBM's
expertise from thousands of smarter city engagements combined with Deutsche
Telekom's global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) capabilities, which include M2M
solutions integration and advanced network connectivity.
The M2M communication
technology facilitates the automated exchange of information between terminal equipment
such as machines, vehicles and containers or with a central control center –
creating an inter-connectivity often referred to as the “Internet of Things.” By
using sensors embedded in a wide array of systems serving the public -- such as
a traffic lights, public transport vehicles or parking spaces -- M2M technology
can report on the status of the system being monitored via the Internet in
real-time. Combining this technology with IBM’s Smarter Cities expertise will
enable intelligent, real-time decision-making allowing for services such as
intelligent traffic management, route optimization, bus or train arrival
prediction, and parking space management.
The Smarter Cities solutions
from Deutsche Telekom and IBM will notably benefit municipalities as they
deliver significant cost efficiencies through better use of their existing
infrastructure and improved planning of resources. This will help cities more
quickly design and deploy next-generation intelligence systems that improve
sustainability. It will also improve the quality of life for citizens, who will
be able to anticipate traffic delays and bus or train arrivals when traveling,
find public parking spots more easily, and gain improved access to a wide array
of relevant city information and services, for example.

In this video, IBM, NXP and
partners demonstrate the first results of a smarter traffic pilot, conducted in
the Dutch city of Eindhoven.
The trial demonstrates how the connected car automatically shares braking,
acceleration and location data that can be analyzed by the central traffic
authority to identify and resolve road network issues.
IBM recently announced it
has completed the acquisition of StoredIQ, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas.
The acquisition advances
IBM’s efforts to help clients derive value from big data, respond more
efficiently to litigation and regulations, and dispose of information in an
automated way that has outlived its purpose.
IBM estimates that 2.5
quintillion bytes of data are created every day -- so much that 90 percent of
the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. As a
result, chief information officers (CIOs) and general counsels (GCs) are
overwhelmed by volumes of information that exceed their tax IT budgets and
their capacity to meet legal requirements. Storing old, unnecessary data adds
storage and infrastructure costs and compromises companies’ ability to effectively
comply with legal obligations.
Adding StoredIQ to IBM’s big
data offerings gives organizations tools for more effective governance of the
vast majority of information, including its timely disposal to eliminate
unnecessary data that consumes infrastructure and elevates risk. The addition
of StoredIQ builds on IBM's prior acquisitions of PSS Systems and Vivisimo as
well as organic solutions that improve information economics including
value-based archiving, records and retention management, ediscovery management,
and disposal and data governance.
IBM recently announced that Nextra Teleservices Pvt
Ltd (Nextra), an emerging Internet Service Provider (ISP), has selected IBM's
PureSystems technology to provide the IT backbone for its high-speed broadband
infrastructure. The system will also support Nextra's business growth, allowing
it to introduce innovative value added services securely, quickly and in-line
with increases in available bandwidth.
The new IBM PureFlex System will help Nextra to
remove system bottlenecks, streamline internal processes and ensure
uninterrupted high-speed broadband service for individual clients as well as
for small and medium companies in Delhi Northern Capital Region (NCR).The IBM
PureFlex System, with its integrated storage capability, is ideal for the
management and virtualization of internal and third-party storage that
typically slows down ISP infrastructures. In fact, since deploying the system,
Nextra has seen its storage utilization increased by up to 30 percent.
“We were looking at starting a new line of business
and IBM PureFlex was the best solution matching our needs because of its fully
fledged cloud capabilities,” said Puneesh Singla, General Manager – Information
Systems, Nextra Teleservices. “We believe PureFlex will help us to be faster
and more efficient in designing and marketing new collaboration services to
cater to millions subscribers."
With high demand for its hosted and next generation
services, Nextra required a reliable, flexible and robust IT infrastructure to
