IBM recently announced that
it plans to open a center of excellence in New York City to help financial services
firms adopt open-source virtualization technologies. The KVM Center of
Excellence in New York
is the second such center established by IBM in the past five months. The first
was opened in December in Beijing.
The center will help clients, software engineers and business partners to
quickly leverage open-source virtualization to build cloud-computing platforms.
Kernel-based Virtual Machine
(KVM) is virtualization software designed for Linux and Windows. Virtualization
is used for server and desktop consolidation and cloud computing. KVM is an
alternative to proprietary virtualization software and can help companies
realize significant cost savings and avoid vendor lock-in. According to data
from IDC, the worldwide virtual-machine software market was on track to grow to
over $3.6 billion in 2012, up from $3.0 billion the year before, a 19.3%
year-over-year growth. KVM is growing at 150% year over year in terms of unit
shipments, with over 100,000 servers already using it worldwide for

IBM QRadar Vulnerability Manager gives security officers a prioritized view across their entire network, helping them to quickly strengthen and fortify their defenses. By aggregating vulnerability information into a single view, security teams can see the results from multiple network, endpoint, database or application scanners where it can be quickly reviewed and managed.

Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA, Tyan Announce Development Group for Data Centers
Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan recently announced plans to form the OpenPOWER Consortium – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture. The Consortium intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers.
The move makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time as well as making POWER IP licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform. The consortium will offer open-source POWER firmware, the software that controls basic chip functions. By doing this, IBM and the consortium can offer unprecedented customization in creating new styles of server hardware for a variety of computing workloads.

definitive agreement to acquire Texas Memory Systems (TMS), a leading developer
of high-performance flash memory solutions. TMS is a privately held company
based in Houston, Texas. Financial terms of the deal were not

rely on spinning disks and robotic arms, solid state systems are high-speed
data storage solutions based on Flash or RAM memory that can provide
significantly faster throughput and data access while consuming less power.
TMS offers its solid state solutions as the RamSan
family of shared rackmount systems and Peripheral Component Interconnect
Express (PCIe) cards. The products are designed to help companies improve
performance and reduce server sprawl, power consumption, cooling, and floor
space requirements, all of which in turn can help clients save money, improve
performance and invest more in innovation.

A recent altimeter
report, surveying private social networking decision makers for 250+ sized
organizations, asked how much impact a private social network had on
collaboration between teams and departments. 64.2% of executives told Altimeter
it was moderate to very significant. 65% said private social networking had an
impact on reducing internal emails, while another 60% were able to streamline a
business process. Other tangible business efficiencies as a result of internal
social networking included increased employee retention, faster decision
making, and a reduction in the volume of meetings

IBM Unveils New Technology to Connect a Smarter Planet
IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy took a major technological step forward recently with the introduction of IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.
Over the next 15 years, the number of machines and sensors connected to the Internet will explode. According to IMS Research, there will be more than 22 billion web-connected devices by 2020[i].These new devices will generate more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data every day[ii], while every hour enough information is consumed by Internet traffic to fill seven million DVDs.[iii]
Building on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology, IBM MessageSight delivers the performance, value and simplicity that organizations need to accommodate the growing multitude of mobile devices and sensors. This enables large volumes of events to be processed in near real time, allowing organizations to consolidate all of the information in one place and more easily glean insights to make better business decisions. IBM MessageSight is capable of supporting one million concurrent sensors or smart devices and can scale up to thirteen million messages per second.

Promoting Better Health in Haiti with IBM SmartCloud
The 2010 earthquake in Haiti increased two American doctors' efforts to create a humanitarian, non-profit program named Colleagues In Care in an effort to provide education and training to those who were affected by the earthquake.
