IBM recently announced new
technologies designed to help companies and governments tackle Big Data by
making it simpler, faster and more economical to analyze massive amounts of
data. New data acceleration innovation results in as much as 25 times faster
reporting and analytics.

a flood of structured and unstructured data generated by computers, mobile
devices, sensors and social networks, they're under unprecedented pressure to

represents the work of hundreds of IBM developers and researchers in labs
around the world, includes an industry-first innovation called "BLU
Acceleration," which combines a number of techniques to dramatically
improve analytical performance and simplify administration.
IBM recently announced it
has completed the acquisition of StoredIQ, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas.
The acquisition advances
IBM’s efforts to help clients derive value from big data, respond more
efficiently to litigation and regulations, and dispose of information in an
automated way that has outlived its purpose.
IBM estimates that 2.5
quintillion bytes of data are created every day -- so much that 90 percent of
the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. As a
result, chief information officers (CIOs) and general counsels (GCs) are
overwhelmed by volumes of information that exceed their tax IT budgets and
their capacity to meet legal requirements. Storing old, unnecessary data adds
storage and infrastructure costs and compromises companies’ ability to effectively
comply with legal obligations.
Adding StoredIQ to IBM’s big
data offerings gives organizations tools for more effective governance of the
vast majority of information, including its timely disposal to eliminate
unnecessary data that consumes infrastructure and elevates risk. The addition
of StoredIQ builds on IBM's prior acquisitions of PSS Systems and Vivisimo as
well as organic solutions that improve information economics including
value-based archiving, records and retention management, ediscovery management,
and disposal and data governance.
Vulnerability management, say hello to Security Intelligence
IBM recently announced an integrated security intelligence solution that helps organizations identify key vulnerabilities in real-time, while reducing total cost of security operations.
IBM QRadar Vulnerability Manager gives security officers a prioritized view across their entire network, helping them to quickly strengthen and fortify their defenses. By aggregating vulnerability information into a single view, security teams can see the results from multiple network, endpoint, database or application scanners where it can be quickly reviewed and managed.

Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA, Tyan Announce Development Group for Data Centers
Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan recently announced plans to form the OpenPOWER Consortium – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture. The Consortium intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers.
The move makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time as well as making POWER IP licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform. The consortium will offer open-source POWER firmware, the software that controls basic chip functions. By doing this, IBM and the consortium can offer unprecedented customization in creating new styles of server hardware for a variety of computing workloads.
IBM Unveils New Technology to Connect a Smarter Planet
IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy took a major technological step forward recently with the introduction of IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.
Over the next 15 years, the number of machines and sensors connected to the Internet will explode. According to IMS Research, there will be more than 22 billion web-connected devices by 2020[i].These new devices will generate more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data every day[ii], while every hour enough information is consumed by Internet traffic to fill seven million DVDs.[iii]
Building on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology, IBM MessageSight delivers the performance, value and simplicity that organizations need to accommodate the growing multitude of mobile devices and sensors. This enables large volumes of events to be processed in near real time, allowing organizations to consolidate all of the information in one place and more easily glean insights to make better business decisions. IBM MessageSight is capable of supporting one million concurrent sensors or smart devices and can scale up to thirteen million messages per second.
As social media tools become
more prevalent, those participating in the online conversation become

IBM and Vodafone recently announced a
collaboration to combine mobile communications and cloud computing for the
remote management of ‘smart home’ appliances.
At the IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin, Vodafone and IBM
demonstrated the mobile management of a washing machine and other smart home
devices that are connected by Vodafone’s Global M2M Platform running on IBM’s
Service Delivery Platform.

IBM Helps Xiu.com Analyze Big Data to Grow Daily Sales 10 Times
IBM recently announced that Xiu.com, one of China’s leading online retailers of overseas luxury brands, grew its daily sales by 10 times using IBM software for Smarter Commerce to analyze Big Data, offering customers a personalized shopping experience and increased product selection.
IBM customized a solution for Xiu.com that provides the online retailer a centralized, real-time view of customer and product data from across the company. With the new platform, Xiu.com can analyze data to provide its customers with customized interactions based on their habits and preferences.
“IBM Smarter Commerce technology helped Xiu.com drive unprecedented growth in our customer base as well as the diversity of products we offer the millions of shoppers we are now able to serve,” said Wei Wenqi, Vice President of Technology at Xiu.com. “Our growth is a direct result of improving the effectiveness of our supply chain while also transforming our customer experience with Big Data insights informing how we market to, attract and retain our valued shoppers.”
IBM recently announced that
it plans to open a center of excellence in New York City to help financial services
firms adopt open-source virtualization technologies. The KVM Center of
Excellence in New York
is the second such center established by IBM in the past five months. The first
was opened in December in Beijing.
The center will help clients, software engineers and business partners to
quickly leverage open-source virtualization to build cloud-computing platforms.

(KVM) is virtualization software designed for Linux and Windows. Virtualization
is used for server and desktop consolidation and cloud computing. KVM is an
alternative to proprietary virtualization software and can help companies
realize significant cost savings and avoid vendor lock-in. According to data
from IDC, the worldwide virtual-machine software market was on track to grow to
over $3.6 billion in 2012, up from $3.0 billion the year before, a 19.3%
