IBM Simplifies Big Data and Cloud
Computing Adoption with New PureSystems Offerings
New Technologies Enable Organizations Such as the New York Stock Exchange
and the Nielsen Company to Manage and Analyze Enormous Volumes of Data
Making it easier for organizations to quickly adopt
and deploy big data and cloud computing solutions, IBM recently announced major
advances to its PureSystems family of expert integrated systems.

business. The new PureSystems models also help to remove the complexity of
developing cloud-based services by making it easier to provision, deploy and
manage a secure cloud environment. Together, these moves by IBM further extend
its leadership in big data and next generation computing environments such as
cloud computing, while opening up new opportunities within growth markets and
with organizations such as managed service providers (MSPs).
Across all industries and
geographies, organizations of various sizes are being challenged to find
simpler and faster ways to analyze massive amounts of data and better meet
client needs. According to IDC, the market for big data technology and services
will reach $16.9 billion by 2015, up from $3.2 billion in 2010.1 At the same
time, an IBM study found that almost three-fourths of leaders surveyed
indicated their companies had piloted, adopted or substantially implemented
cloud in their organizations – and 90 percent expect to have done so in three
years.2 While the demand is high, many organizations do not have the resources
or skills to embrace it.
These news includes PureData
System for Analytics to capitalize on big data opportunities; a smaller
PureApplication System to accelerate cloud deployments for a broader range of
organizations; PureApplication System on POWER7+ to ease management of
transaction and analytics applications in the cloud; additional options for
MSPs across the PureSystems family including flexible financing options and
specific MSP Editions to support new services models; and SmartCloud Desktop
Infrastructure to ease management of virtual desktop solutions.
IBM recently announced it
has completed the acquisition of StoredIQ, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas.
The acquisition advances
IBM’s efforts to help clients derive value from big data, respond more
efficiently to litigation and regulations, and dispose of information in an
automated way that has outlived its purpose.
IBM estimates that 2.5
quintillion bytes of data are created every day -- so much that 90 percent of
the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. As a
result, chief information officers (CIOs) and general counsels (GCs) are
overwhelmed by volumes of information that exceed their tax IT budgets and
their capacity to meet legal requirements. Storing old, unnecessary data adds
storage and infrastructure costs and compromises companies’ ability to effectively
comply with legal obligations.
Adding StoredIQ to IBM’s big
data offerings gives organizations tools for more effective governance of the
vast majority of information, including its timely disposal to eliminate
unnecessary data that consumes infrastructure and elevates risk. The addition
of StoredIQ builds on IBM's prior acquisitions of PSS Systems and Vivisimo as
well as organic solutions that improve information economics including
value-based archiving, records and retention management, ediscovery management,
and disposal and data governance.
IBM recently announced that
it plans to open a center of excellence in New York City to help financial services
firms adopt open-source virtualization technologies. The KVM Center of
Excellence in New York
is the second such center established by IBM in the past five months. The first
was opened in December in Beijing.
The center will help clients, software engineers and business partners to
quickly leverage open-source virtualization to build cloud-computing platforms.
Kernel-based Virtual Machine
(KVM) is virtualization software designed for Linux and Windows. Virtualization
is used for server and desktop consolidation and cloud computing. KVM is an
alternative to proprietary virtualization software and can help companies
realize significant cost savings and avoid vendor lock-in. According to data
from IDC, the worldwide virtual-machine software market was on track to grow to
over $3.6 billion in 2012, up from $3.0 billion the year before, a 19.3%
year-over-year growth. KVM is growing at 150% year over year in terms of unit
shipments, with over 100,000 servers already using it worldwide for
Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA, Tyan Announce Development Group for Data Centers
Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan recently announced plans to form the OpenPOWER Consortium – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture. The Consortium intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers.
The move makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time as well as making POWER IP licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform. The consortium will offer open-source POWER firmware, the software that controls basic chip functions. By doing this, IBM and the consortium can offer unprecedented customization in creating new styles of server hardware for a variety of computing workloads.
Collaboration in the organization – a social business
One of the biggest buzzwords these days is
‘social media’. Everyone talks about how it’s important to consider a social
media strategy and how their business can be present on Facebook, Twitter etc.
If we can use these new platforms to share and have a dialogue with friends and
family, why shouldn’t we use this new technology to collaborate and share in
our corporate life - within our organization, internally and externally?

and expect to be implemented in the organization. It is more of a change in the

overwhelming amount of emails that we receive everyday and how the intranet and
databases can be confusing, chaotic and slow. When you need the latest
information, a social private network allows you to sort and search by key
words and subjects. Furthermore, you can share videos and voice memos to
increase understanding and make processing of the information easier. You can
have FAQ sites and online forums where you’re able to have a debate which can
benefit not only those directly involved, but also serve others from your
organization that might deal with some of the same issues as yourself.
In a world where everything changes at an
incredible pace, the ability to find information swiftly can help your
organization save time and money.
A recent altimeter
report, surveying private social networking decision makers for 250+ sized
organizations, asked how much impact a private social network had on
collaboration between teams and departments. 64.2% of executives told Altimeter
it was moderate to very significant. 65% said private social networking had an
impact on reducing internal emails, while another 60% were able to streamline a
business process. Other tangible business efficiencies as a result of internal
social networking included increased employee retention, faster decision
making, and a reduction in the volume of meetings
However, you can’t just jump right into it.
Companies need to know exactly what they want to get out of it, and then align
their business process with the right tools and platforms in order for it to be
a successful implementation.

Smarter Computing approach to IT
IBM recently announced it has entered into a
definitive agreement to acquire Texas Memory Systems (TMS), a leading developer
of high-performance flash memory solutions. TMS is a privately held company
based in Houston, Texas. Financial terms of the deal were not

IBM Unveils New Technology to Connect a Smarter Planet
IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy took a major technological step forward recently with the introduction of IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.
Over the next 15 years, the number of machines and sensors connected to the Internet will explode. According to IMS Research, there will be more than 22 billion web-connected devices by 2020[i].These new devices will generate more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data every day[ii], while every hour enough information is consumed by Internet traffic to fill seven million DVDs.[iii]
Building on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology, IBM MessageSight delivers the performance, value and simplicity that organizations need to accommodate the growing multitude of mobile devices and sensors. This enables large volumes of events to be processed in near real time, allowing organizations to consolidate all of the information in one place and more easily glean insights to make better business decisions. IBM MessageSight is capable of supporting one million concurrent sensors or smart devices and can scale up to thirteen million messages per second.

Things" in the home to manage heating, lighting, laundry via Vodafone's Mobile Wireless Network
IBM and Vodafone recently announced a
collaboration to combine mobile communications and cloud computing for the
remote management of ‘smart home’ appliances.
At the IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin, Vodafone and IBM
demonstrated the mobile management of a washing machine and other smart home
devices that are connected by Vodafone’s Global M2M Platform running on IBM’s
Service Delivery Platform.
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology makes home appliances more intelligent by
connecting them wirelessly to the internet. This enables them to feed useful
data back to the service provider or manufacturer to achieve a better customer
experience through new functionality and enhanced services.
