Big Data Helps City of Dublin Improve its Public Bus Transportation Network and Reduce Congestion
IBM recently announced it is helping the City of Dublin use Big Data to identify and solve the root causes of traffic congestion in its public transport network throughout the city, which means improved traffic flow and better mobility for commuters. Integrating data from a citywide network of sensors with geospatial data means that city officials are able to better monitor and manage traffic in real time.
The Dublin City Council (DCC) delivers housing, water and transport services to 1.2 million citizens across the Irish capital. To keep the city moving, the council’s traffic control center works together with local transport operators to manage an extensive network of roads, tramways and bus lanes.
In a collaboration with IBM researchers, its road and traffic department is now able to combine Big Data streaming in from an array of sources – bus timetables, inductive-loop traffic detectors, and closed-circuit television cameras, GPS updates that each of the city’s 1,000 buses transmits every 20 seconds – and build a digital map of the city overlaid with the real-time positions of Dublin’s buses using stream computing and geospatial data.

Bring Your Own Device i praksis: Sådan gør IBM

Case study: Subex Limited
Subex Limited, headquartered in Bangalore, India, is a leading global provider of Business Support Systems for communications service providers. In recent years, the amount of data that Subex has had to manage and analyze for telcos has grown from tens of millions of records to billions of records daily. To keep up with this enormous growth in data, Subex required a new technology architecture that provides the performance and availability to process these records in near real time. Subex is migrating from Oracle Database on Sun systems to IBM DB2 9.7 on IBM Power Systems to gain the scalability needed to support these large volumes of data for its clients. DB2 provided the stability and the processing capabilities required, reduced hardware requirements and offered flexible licensing models to reduce the total cost of ownership of its offering by up to 40 percent.

Case study: Virgin MediaIn the highly competitive world of telecommunications, the players need accurate and up-to-date information to manage their businesses, exploit new opportunities and keep customer churn to a minimum. In 2006, when Virgin Media formed as a single business from the merger of Virgin Mobile, NTL and Telewest, the company found itself with a mixed inheritance of business intelligence tools. Realizing the importance of pulling them together fast, the company immediately set about looking at the best way to create a more effective single system that could serve the whole business. A purpose-built, high-performance Netezza data warehouse appliance makes advanced analytics on very large data volumes simpler, faster and more accessible.

Collaboration in the organization – a social business
One of the biggest buzzwords these days is
‘social media’. Everyone talks about how it’s important to consider a social
media strategy and how their business can be present on Facebook, Twitter etc.
If we can use these new platforms to share and have a dialogue with friends and
family, why shouldn’t we use this new technology to collaborate and share in
our corporate life - within our organization, internally and externally?
Being social and collaborating is more than a company with a Facebook page or Twitter account. It’s about implementing and cultivating a spirit of collaboration and community throughout its organization, both internally and externally. And since it is somewhat of a comprehensive change, the idea of adopting social tools into their organization is often dismissed. Furthermore, the fear of having no control, less privacy and security keeps social business out of the business strategy. But as the employee gets more used to various social platforms and this knowledge and way of sharing spreads to businesses, leaders have to consider and adjust to the idea of an open, interactive environment in order for them to stay competitive.
Most of us can all relate to the overwhelming amount of emails that we receive everyday and how the intranet and databases can be confusing, chaotic and slow. When you need the latest information, a social private network allows you to sort and search by key words and subjects. Furthermore, you can share videos and voice memos to increase understanding and make processing of the information easier. You can have FAQ sites and online forums where you’re able to have a debate which can benefit not only those directly involved, but also serve others from your organization that might deal with some of the same issues as yourself.
In a world where everything changes at an incredible pace, the ability to find information swiftly can help your organization save time and money.
A recent altimeter report, surveying private social networking decision makers for 250+ sized organizations, asked how much impact a private social network had on collaboration between teams and departments. 64.2% of executives told Altimeter it was moderate to very significant. 65% said private social networking had an impact on reducing internal emails, while another 60% were able to streamline a business process. Other tangible business efficiencies as a result of internal social networking included increased employee retention, faster decision making, and a reduction in the volume of meetings
However, you can’t just jump right into it. Companies need to know exactly what they want to get out of it, and then align their business process with the right tools and platforms in order for it to be a successful implementation.

Dansk kommune satser på CSC som leverandør af it
Dansk kommune har valgt CSC som leverandør af kommunal it de næste fire år. Læs hvorfor it-giganten fik aftalen i hus i KMD-land.

Deutsche Telekom and IBM Collaborate to Help Build Smarter Cities
Deutsche Telekom and IBM recently announced a collaboration to provide an integrated solutions portfolio that enables cities to make smarter use of their services through intelligent data capture and analysis. The Smarter Cities solutions will build on IBM's expertise from thousands of smarter city engagements combined with Deutsche Telekom's global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) capabilities, which include M2M solutions integration and advanced network connectivity.
The M2M communication technology facilitates the automated exchange of information between terminal equipment such as machines, vehicles and containers or with a central control center – creating an inter-connectivity often referred to as the “Internet of Things.” By using sensors embedded in a wide array of systems serving the public -- such as a traffic lights, public transport vehicles or parking spaces -- M2M technology can report on the status of the system being monitored via the Internet in real-time. Combining this technology with IBM’s Smarter Cities expertise will enable intelligent, real-time decision-making allowing for services such as intelligent traffic management, route optimization, bus or train arrival prediction, and parking space management.
The Smarter Cities solutions from Deutsche Telekom and IBM will notably benefit municipalities as they deliver significant cost efficiencies through better use of their existing infrastructure and improved planning of resources. This will help cities more quickly design and deploy next-generation intelligence systems that improve sustainability. It will also improve the quality of life for citizens, who will be able to anticipate traffic delays and bus or train arrivals when traveling, find public parking spots more easily, and gain improved access to a wide array of relevant city information and services, for example.
