IBM Study Points to CMO, Marketer of the Future, as Customer Experiences Remain Top Priority
IBM’s new survey of marketing professionals finds that chief marketing officers (CMOs) are differentiating their brands by crunching big data in real-time and automating personalized marketing campaigns. The price tag for failing to meet the needs of today's so-called "omni-channel shoppers" -- who frequent both online and in-store channels -- is $83 billion in lost sales in the U.S. each year due to poor and inconsistent customer experiences.
Other top findings from the survey point to leading marketers taking greater responsibility over customer service interactions as they become the official brand stewards company-wide. At the same time, leading marketers are capitalizing on big data to better personalize their marketing communications. They are looking beyond segments and demographics to provide the right offers, services and information at exactly the right moment in the customer relationship. Further, marketers are looking to use location-based services to target more digitally-savvy, on-the-move customers and deliver seamless, intuitive customer interactions.
The survey, which identified leading marketers based on their level of adoption of cross-channel technologies and their ability to proactively influence the customer experience, found that 39 percent of leading marketers are adjusting real-time offers based on customer wants, needs and preferences. In comparison, only 15 percent of remaining marketers surveyed do so. Seventy-one percent of leading marketers are delivering personalized messages in real-time through social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and review sites, while 62 percent of leading marketers are delivering those same personalized messages through the mobile channel.
IBM Unveils New Software to Enable Mainframe Applications on Cloud, Mobile Devices
IBM recently announced new software to help organizations extend crucial business applications running on System z mainframes to web, cloud and mobile environments. The software's performance improvements will enable companies to significantly reduce operating costs while helping businesses seamlessly and efficiently extend services for support of modern infrastructures.
Nearly 15 percent of all new enterprise application functionality is written in COBOL. The programming language also powers many everyday services such as ATM transactions, check processing, travel booking and insurance claims. With more than 200 billion lines of COBOL code being used across industries such as banking, insurance, retail and human resources, it is crucial for businesses to have the appropriate framework to improve performance, modernize key applications and increase productivity.
IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS, enables developers to deliver significant performance improvements in their business critical applications. For example, applications using the new compiler have shown performance increases of 10 to 20 percent.
Big Data Helps City of Dublin Improve its Public Bus Transportation Network and Reduce Congestion
IBM recently announced it is helping the City of Dublin use Big Data to identify and solve the root causes of traffic congestion in its public transport network throughout the city, which means improved traffic flow and better mobility for commuters. Integrating data from a citywide network of sensors with geospatial data means that city officials are able to better monitor and manage traffic in real time.
The Dublin City Council (DCC) delivers housing, water and transport services to 1.2 million citizens across the Irish capital. To keep the city moving, the council’s traffic control center works together with local transport operators to manage an extensive network of roads, tramways and bus lanes.
In a collaboration with IBM researchers, its road and traffic department is now able to combine Big Data streaming in from an array of sources – bus timetables, inductive-loop traffic detectors, and closed-circuit television cameras, GPS updates that each of the city’s 1,000 buses transmits every 20 seconds – and build a digital map of the city overlaid with the real-time positions of Dublin’s buses using stream computing and geospatial data.

IBM Unveils New Technology to Connect a Smarter Planet
IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy took a major technological step forward recently with the introduction of IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.
Over the next 15 years, the number of machines and sensors connected to the Internet will explode. According to IMS Research, there will be more than 22 billion web-connected devices by 2020[i].These new devices will generate more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data every day[ii], while every hour enough information is consumed by Internet traffic to fill seven million DVDs.[iii]
Building on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology, IBM MessageSight delivers the performance, value and simplicity that organizations need to accommodate the growing multitude of mobile devices and sensors. This enables large volumes of events to be processed in near real time, allowing organizations to consolidate all of the information in one place and more easily glean insights to make better business decisions. IBM MessageSight is capable of supporting one million concurrent sensors or smart devices and can scale up to thirteen million messages per second.

Waiting days or even months to get an update to clients is no longer acceptable. With UrbanCode’s technology, businesses can reduce the cycle time it takes to get updates or new applications into market, from months to minutes. This approach is designed to help reduce cost and risk, while helping address changing client needs by enabling a company to rapidly incorporate feedback into and improve the overall quality of their applications and services.

IBM Drives Flash Technology Deeper into the Enterprise to Speed Big Data Analytics
IBM recently unveiled a strategic initiative to drive Flash technology further into the enterprise to help organizations better tackle the mounting challenges of Big Data.
Flash, a highly efficient re-writable memory, can speed the response times of information gathering in servers and storage systems from milliseconds to microseconds – orders of magnitude faster. Because it contains no moving parts, the technology is also more reliable, durable and more energy efficient than spinning hard drives.

IBM Helps Itella Streamline Business

IBM recently announced that
it has signed a seven-year cloud computing agreement with Itella, a leading
provider of business services in Europe and Russia, to streamline its business
operations and improve flexibility and time-to-market. The modern cloud-based
service delivery platform and use of IBM’s global industry assets will enable
and expedite Itella's transformation to a more agile enterprise. The agreement
will allow Itella to focus on its core business and develop new value-add
services for its clients.
Itella provides postal,
logistics and financial transaction process services in Northern and Central
Europe as well as Russia.
As a services company it has specialized in managing its client’s important
information and product processes. As a result of competition and escalating
costs, Itella is now working with IBM to strengthen the company’s competitive
advantage and enhance its business operations as well as improve cost
efficiency. More efficient use of technology is essential to improving its
agility and flexibility.
IBM will build a private
cloud to provide hosting as well as application management and development
services to Itella. With the cloud, IBM will automate basic production of
technology services as well as improve the quality and management of those

it plans to open a center of excellence in New York City to help financial services
firms adopt open-source virtualization technologies. The KVM Center of
Excellence in New York
is the second such center established by IBM in the past five months. The first
was opened in December in Beijing.
The center will help clients, software engineers and business partners to
quickly leverage open-source virtualization to build cloud-computing platforms.
Kernel-based Virtual Machine
(KVM) is virtualization software designed for Linux and Windows. Virtualization
is used for server and desktop consolidation and cloud computing. KVM is an
alternative to proprietary virtualization software and can help companies
realize significant cost savings and avoid vendor lock-in. According to data
from IDC, the worldwide virtual-machine software market was on track to grow to
over $3.6 billion in 2012, up from $3.0 billion the year before, a 19.3%
year-over-year growth. KVM is growing at 150% year over year in terms of unit
shipments, with over 100,000 servers already using it worldwide for
