Deutsche Telekom and IBM Collaborate
to Help Build Smarter Cities
Deutsche Telekom and IBM
recently announced a collaboration to provide an integrated solutions portfolio
that enables cities to make smarter use of their services through intelligent
data capture and analysis. The Smarter Cities solutions will build on IBM's
expertise from thousands of smarter city engagements combined with Deutsche
Telekom's global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) capabilities, which include M2M
solutions integration and advanced network connectivity.
The M2M communication
technology facilitates the automated exchange of information between terminal equipment
such as machines, vehicles and containers or with a central control center –
creating an inter-connectivity often referred to as the “Internet of Things.” By
using sensors embedded in a wide array of systems serving the public -- such as
a traffic lights, public transport vehicles or parking spaces -- M2M technology
can report on the status of the system being monitored via the Internet in
real-time. Combining this technology with IBM’s Smarter Cities expertise will
enable intelligent, real-time decision-making allowing for services such as
intelligent traffic management, route optimization, bus or train arrival
prediction, and parking space management.

deliver significant cost efficiencies through better use of their existing

AT&T has been expanding
its network capabilities and increasing access to research from AT&T Labs
across a range of mobile development platforms, including IBM Worklight. Part
of the IBM MobileFirst Application and Data Platform, IBM Worklight is an open,
comprehensive and advanced mobile app platform for mobile devices.
Now, the AT&T API
Platform, featuring IBM Worklight Adapters, will enable the more than 31,000
members of the AT&T Developer Program to quickly create and securely deploy
enterprise apps that improve subscriber engagement and customer loyalty. With
these adapters that support AT&T’s ecosystem of APIs including those for
speech, SMS, device capabilities, notary management and payment, developers can
quickly and securely create rich, business-ready apps across a variety of
platforms including iOS, Android and Windows.

IBM Unveils the Most Comprehensive Mobile Portfolio for Global Businesses: IBM MobileFirst
IBM recently unveiled IBM MobileFirst, the most
comprehensive mobile portfolio that combines security, analytics and app
development software, with cloud-based services and deep mobile expertise.
Using IBM MobileFirst solutions, businesses can now streamline everything from
the management of employee mobile devices, to the creation of a new mobile commerce
app that will transform their entire business model.
This move by IBM builds off
of its experience helping nearly 1,000 customers become mobile enterprises, and
takes advantage of its thousands of mobile experts and 270 patents in wireless
innovations. Additionally, IBM has made 10 mobile-related acquisitions in the
past four years alone.

IBM recently announced it
has completed the acquisition of StoredIQ, a privately held company based in Austin, Texas.
The acquisition advances
IBM’s efforts to help clients derive value from big data, respond more
efficiently to litigation and regulations, and dispose of information in an
automated way that has outlived its purpose.
IBM estimates that 2.5
quintillion bytes of data are created every day -- so much that 90 percent of
the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. As a
result, chief information officers (CIOs) and general counsels (GCs) are
overwhelmed by volumes of information that exceed their tax IT budgets and
their capacity to meet legal requirements. Storing old, unnecessary data adds
storage and infrastructure costs and compromises companies’ ability to effectively
comply with legal obligations.
Adding StoredIQ to IBM’s big
data offerings gives organizations tools for more effective governance of the
vast majority of information, including its timely disposal to eliminate
unnecessary data that consumes infrastructure and elevates risk. The addition
of StoredIQ builds on IBM's prior acquisitions of PSS Systems and Vivisimo as
well as organic solutions that improve information economics including
value-based archiving, records and retention management, ediscovery management,
and disposal and data governance.

IBM recently announced a
definitive agreement to acquire the software portfolio of Star Analytics Inc.,
a privately held business analytics company headquartered in Redwood City, California.
Financial terms were not disclosed.

This new solution combines
real-time correlation for continuous insight, custom analytics across massive
structured data (such as security device alerts, operating system logs, DNS
transactions and network flows) and unstructured data (such as emails, social
media content, full packet information and business transactions), and forensic
capabilities for evidence gathering. The combination helps organizations
address the most vexing security challenges, including advanced persistent
threats, fraud and insider threats.
Waterfund LLC recently announced that it has
signed an agreement with IBM to develop a Water Cost Index (WCI).
Scientists from IBM Research will apply Big
Data expertise, acting as a calculation agent, to analyze large and diverse
unstructured data sets. This will be used to develop of a WCI framework that
would estimate the cost of water in different regions around the world. With
its market and financial product expertise, Waterfund will work to structure
and commercialize the WCI.
