Danish energy company Vestas Wind Systems will use IBM
big data analytics software and powerful IBM systems to improve wind turbine
placement for optimal energy output. Turbine placement is a major challenge for
the renewable energy industry, and Vestas expects to accelerate the adoption of
wind energy internationally and expand its business into new markets by
overcoming this challenge.
The final solution cut the processing time from 3
weeks to 15 minutes and cut server energy consumption by 40%.
Vestas is addressing the issue of turbine placement by using IBM BigInsights
software and an IBM "Firestorm" supercomputer to analyze petabytes of
structured and unstructured data such as weather reports, moon and tidal
phases, geospatial and sensor data, satellite images, deforestation maps, and
weather modeling research to pinpoint installation. The analysis, which used to
take weeks, can now be done in less than one hour.

SJ, Sweden’s Largest Rail Operator, Turns to IBM to Improve Mobile, Online Customer Experience, Increase Sales
IBM recently announced that SJ®, Sweden’s largest rail operator, is turning to customer experience management software from IBM to improve its mobile and online booking process and overall online customer experience to increase ticket sales.
IBM's customer experience management (CEM) solutions are helping SJ to understand, identify, and eliminate consumer pain points on online and mobile channels. Visualization and analytics tools designed to help businesses understand and keep pace with the rapidly shifting preferences of today’s increasingly digital consumers are part of IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative to help maximize the value of every single customer visit (web and mobile) and ensuring that more transactions are completed successfully.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, SJ transports more than 100,000 passengers every day, with more than 50 percent of passenger bookings completed online. However, during an initial investigation, SJ discovered that more than 230,000 customers annually were experiencing difficulties when booking online travel with a credit card, which ultimately impacted ticket sales.

IBM Study Points to CMO, Marketer of the Future, as Customer Experiences Remain Top Priority
IBM’s new survey of marketing professionals finds that chief marketing officers (CMOs) are differentiating their brands by crunching big data in real-time and automating personalized marketing campaigns. The price tag for failing to meet the needs of today's so-called "omni-channel shoppers" -- who frequent both online and in-store channels -- is $83 billion in lost sales in the U.S. each year due to poor and inconsistent customer experiences.
Other top findings from the survey point to leading marketers taking greater responsibility over customer service interactions as they become the official brand stewards company-wide. At the same time, leading marketers are capitalizing on big data to better personalize their marketing communications. They are looking beyond segments and demographics to provide the right offers, services and information at exactly the right moment in the customer relationship. Further, marketers are looking to use location-based services to target more digitally-savvy, on-the-move customers and deliver seamless, intuitive customer interactions.
The survey, which identified leading marketers based on their level of adoption of cross-channel technologies and their ability to proactively influence the customer experience, found that 39 percent of leading marketers are adjusting real-time offers based on customer wants, needs and preferences. In comparison, only 15 percent of remaining marketers surveyed do so. Seventy-one percent of leading marketers are delivering personalized messages in real-time through social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and review sites, while 62 percent of leading marketers are delivering those same personalized messages through the mobile channel.

Big Data Helps City of Dublin Improve its Public Bus Transportation Network and Reduce Congestion
IBM recently announced it is helping the City of Dublin use Big Data to identify and solve the root causes of traffic congestion in its public transport network throughout the city, which means improved traffic flow and better mobility for commuters. Integrating data from a citywide network of sensors with geospatial data means that city officials are able to better monitor and manage traffic in real time.
The Dublin City Council (DCC) delivers housing, water and transport services to 1.2 million citizens across the Irish capital. To keep the city moving, the council’s traffic control center works together with local transport operators to manage an extensive network of roads, tramways and bus lanes.
In a collaboration with IBM researchers, its road and traffic department is now able to combine Big Data streaming in from an array of sources – bus timetables, inductive-loop traffic detectors, and closed-circuit television cameras, GPS updates that each of the city’s 1,000 buses transmits every 20 seconds – and build a digital map of the city overlaid with the real-time positions of Dublin’s buses using stream computing and geospatial data.
Mobile Experience is Critical to Business Success but Most CMOs and eCommerce Executives Struggle to Understand the Omnichannel Customer, Says IBM
A new IBM sponsored survey of business professionals finds that while chief marketing officers (CMOs) and ecommerce leaders recognize mobile as critical to their business objectives, two-thirds of those same professionals, indicate they don't have a strong understanding of the mobile user experience. With 89 percent of customers choosing to do business with a competitor, following a poor customer experience, businesses are turning to big data and digital analytics to better understand the omnichannel customer.
Mobile traffic continues to grow, with respondents attributing 19 percent of their total traffic to a mobile device. But businesses continue to struggle with providing a quality mobile experience, with 40 percent of companies agreeing that “delivering positive customer experiences is harder on mobile than the web”.
For many companies, their answer to creating a mobile presence is simply adapting an existing website as opposed to building a mobile experience from the ground up, with 70 percent of respondents describing their multichannel experience for customers as “okay” or “poor”. As such, the top three most serious mobile issues include bad navigation/poor “findabilty” screen-sizing issues, and form-filling problems.

IBM recently announced that Nextra Teleservices Pvt
Ltd (Nextra), an emerging Internet Service Provider (ISP), has selected IBM's
PureSystems technology to provide the IT backbone for its high-speed broadband
infrastructure. The system will also support Nextra's business growth, allowing
it to introduce innovative value added services securely, quickly and in-line
with increases in available bandwidth.
The new IBM PureFlex System will help Nextra to
remove system bottlenecks, streamline internal processes and ensure
uninterrupted high-speed broadband service for individual clients as well as
for small and medium companies in Delhi Northern Capital Region (NCR).The IBM
PureFlex System, with its integrated storage capability, is ideal for the
management and virtualization of internal and third-party storage that
typically slows down ISP infrastructures. In fact, since deploying the system,
Nextra has seen its storage utilization increased by up to 30 percent.

E.ON and IBM Deliver Innovative Service Offerings to Customers with New Smart Energy Solutions
IBM recently announced that it has been selected by E.ON Metering to operate its Smart Metering IT infrastructure in a private cloud. The new platform will improve the integration of renewable and decentralized energy sources, while also allowing E.ON to deliver personalized services that will put customers in better control of energy usage.
E.ON Metering, a company of E.ON, one of the world's largest investor-owned power and gas companies, will use IBM's Intelligent Energy Service Enablement Platform (IESEP) to improve the deployment and management of smart meters, simplify the integration of renewables, and other innovative services, while at the same time maintaining a high level of customer service.
Under this agreement E.ON will migrate and host the infrastructure in a private cloud using IBM SmartCloud, at one of IBM's Data Centers in Germany. At the same time, the new platform will be upgraded with new analytics and management tools based on IBM Software that will allow E.ON to provide higher-value-added data services for customers. For example, customers will have the ability to view their usage profiles for information about time-of-use-rates and changes in use patterns that can be compared with historical data.
IBM recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire The Now Factory, a privately held provider of analytics software that helps communications service providers (CSPs) deliver better customer experiences and drive new revenue opportunities. The company is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Financial terms were not disclosed.
This acquisition also complements the IBM MobileFirst Analytics portfolio, which is designed to enhance the way organizations analyze mobile device usage to provide exceptional customer experiences.
Using The Now Factory’s software, CSPs can gain real-time insights into their customers by analyzing massive quantities of network and business data. With this type of insight, CSPs can provide an enhanced quality of service to their customers by better managing negative experiences and network outages.
The demand for this type of software is being driven by the explosion of growth in the volume of real-time data that is being produced by mobile devices and the strain it is putting on mobile networks to collect and process events instantly, monitor their performance, and understand the impact of customer interaction.
IBM Placed in Leaders Quadrant by Leading Analyst Firm for IBM MobileFirst
IBM recently announced that Gartner has positioned IBM as a Leader in the Magic Quadrant for Mobile Application Development Platforms.[i]
The new report places IBM in the Leaders Quadrant, as measured by completeness of vision and execution ability of IBM Worklight, IBM’s mobile application development platform. Acquired by IBM in February 2012, IBM Worklight is a member of the IBM MobileFirst family of solutions. In just one year, IBM has advanced from the Niche Quadrant to the Leaders Quadrant.
This announcement follows a string of strong showings for IBM MobileFirst services and software capabilities, including IBM Worklight, in Gartner Magic Quadrants this summer. In July, IBM was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Security Testing.[ii] IBM is also named a visionary in Magic Quadrants for Managed Mobility Services[iii] and Mobile Device Management[iv].
According to the report, as this market reaches early mainstream status, Gartner expects Leaders to be profitable, and to present lower risk and consistently high project results as the market begins to consolidate and competition grows. Open Source Robotics Foundation Chooses SoftLayer, an IBM Company, to Host First Cloud-Based Robotics Challenge
The Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), the non-profit organization charged with supporting the development, distribution and adoption of open-source software for use in robotics research, education and product development, recently relied on SoftLayer Technologies to host the DARPA Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC). SoftLayer, now an IBM company, provided the multi-faceted infrastructure of bare metal, cloud and high-performance GPU servers to help push the boundaries of robotics technology. OSRF was funded by DARPA to support the simulator-based event, part of the broader DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC).
Competitors in the VRC sought to develop software to enable a simulated robot to execute tasks similar to the activities that might be required of emergency personnel in a disaster response situation. The VRC drew more than 100 teams from around the world, and SoftLayer’s uniquely customizable cloud platform allowed them to compete from remote locations. The winners of the virtual competition will move on to the next stage of the DRC, in which the software they tested during the VRC will be applied to physical robots during a live event.

IBM recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire CSL International, a leading provider of virtualization management technology for IBM’s zEnterprise system. CSL International is a privately held company headquartered in Herzliya Pituach, Israel.
A strategic investment in the System z portfolio, the acquisition deepens the consolidation and cloud capabilities by offering simplified management of the virtualization environment. CSL International’s CSL-WAVE software enables companies to monitor and manage their z/VM and Linux on System z environments using a powerful and easy-to-use interface. The software provides drag and drop simplicity to instantly create, discover, visualize and connect virtual servers to resources allowing clients to free up more skilled staff to address other business challenges.

New Project Aims to Make New York’s Lake George the “Smartest Lake” in the World
IBM recently announced the launch of “The Jefferson Project at Lake George,” a three-year, multi-million dollar collaboration with the goal of understanding and managing complex factors—including road salt, storm water runoff and invasive species—threatening one of the world’s most pristine natural ecosystems and an economic cornerstone of the New York tourism industry. The collaboration partners expect that this world-class scientific and technology facility at Lake George will create a new model for predictive preservation and remediation of critical natural systems on Lake George, in New York, and ultimately around the world.
IBM recently announced that it has completed the acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies Inc., a privately held cloud computing infrastructure company based in Dallas, Texas. On June 4, IBM announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire SoftLayer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
SoftLayer joins IBM’s new cloud services division, which combines SoftLayer with IBM SmartCloud into a global platform. The new division, led by General Manager James Comfort, will provide a broad range of choices to both IBM and SoftLayer clients, ISVs, and channel and technology partners.
“Cloud computing provides a profound and transformative change in business and government,” said Comfort at IBM. "With SoftLayer in IBM’s portfolio, it will be easier and faster for organizations to adopt game-changing cloud services.”

mobile, management and storage components for its PureFlex
and Flex System portfolios. Key among these components is a new storage system
to help improve storage utilization as much as 30 percent while delivering
extraordinary ease of use.
This storage system is tightly integrated
Flex System Manager and uses IBM Storwize family virtualization and unique
IBM Real-time Compression technologies to help clients reduce storage
requirements by up to 80 percent. As a result, clients can run their most
important workloads with no application performance degradation.
IBM also unveiled new capabilities for
PureFlex and Flex Systems that will provide the management and administration
tools clients need to effectively increase their datacenter
utilization. These include: integrated end-to-end storage management;
mobile access to the system for clients through a wide range of mobile devices
(Android, Blackberry and iOS); and centralized control of user id's and
passwords across nodes and chassis for greater system security. These features
will build upon the capabilities of Flex System Manager to help organizations
more efficiently create and manage their IT infrastructures.
IBM recently announced it
has completed the acquisition of the software portfolio of Star Analytics,
Inc., a privately held business analytics company headquartered in Redwood City, California. Financial
terms were not disclosed.
The combination of IBM and
Star Analytics’ software will further advance IBM's business analytics
initiatives allowing clients to easily access financial information stored in
their applications, allowing them to make more informed decisions faster.

part of IBM's larger focus on analytics, which spans hardware, software,
services and research.
The news supports IBM's
long-term growth strategy to expand the company’s business analytics and
optimization software and services capabilities, an area of IBM's business that
is expected to reach $20 billion in revenue by 2015.
IBM has established one of
the world’s deepest portfolios of analytics and big data technologies and
industry expertise, including almost 9,000 dedicated business analytics and
optimization consultants, and 400 researchers. Nearly 500 of the patents

IBM and Monitise recently announced an agreement that boosts Visa Europe’s ability to provide its member banks with new mobile banking, payment and commerce services in the cloud for its customers. IBM will help Monitise extend and scale the adoption of these services with Visa Europe and develop additional services to bring to the mobile marketplace.
By supporting Monitise solutions with IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative, member banks from Visa Europe can accelerate the deployment of a broad range of mobile services on all types of devices. These mobile services enable its customers to more easily manage their money, make transactions and connect with relevant retailers from their mobile device.
Visa predicts that by 2020, more than half of its transactions will be carried out on a mobile device. Freight and Transportation Giant Damco loads up IBM PureSystems to help meet Business Demands
IBM recently announced that Damco A/S, a subsidiary of A.P. Moller – Maersk, will replace their existing IT infrastructure with a datacenter built on IBM PureSystems. As part of the agreement, which is the largest single deployment of PureFlex Systems in the world, IBM will also provide outsourcing services. The new technology and services are designed to provide a solid foundation for Damco’s future growth and will also deliver the flexibility the company requires to meet new trends and business demands in the market.
Damco needed a new strategic and more simplified IT platform for their future IT operation and Damco needed to reduce IT costs without compromising a high level of stability and flexibility in their IT operation.
IBM will also take over the operation of Damco’s SAP systems and the operation of their distributed platforms including Intel, Linux and storage.

IBM and AT&T Equip Enterprises to Deliver High-Performing Mobile Applications
IBM and AT&T recently announced they are working together to help businesses develop more network-efficient mobile apps. The new integration of AT&T and IBM technology enables enterprises to conduct comprehensive testing and analysis of their apps' network and battery usage on mobile devices, and quickly make necessary changes; creating higher-quality, better performing mobile apps.
For the first time, IBM clients will be able to determine how their enterprise mobile app is performing on any wireless network, and then rapidly improve performance through development tools. The integration of AT&T’s Application Resource Optimizer (ARO) with IBM’s software development solution for Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) expands the development capabilities of the IBM MobileFirst strategy.
“ARO tackles a fundamental coding challenge developers face today – finding and fixing performance and power bottlenecks that detract from a great user experience,” said Carlton Hill, vice president –Developer Services, AT&T. “ARO can help developers create apps that conserve battery life, load pages faster and consume network resources in a smarter way, all of which improve the customer experience.”
AT&T’s ARO is a free, carrier-agnostic, open source diagnostic tool that enables developers to analyze the performance of their apps, whether they be business or consumer apps. Launched in January 2012, ARO is now used by more than 1,500 developers, and users are seeing better results across the board, from a 35 percent reduction in excess data usage to apps that run up to 60 percent faster. Improving app performance and creating better customer experiences, ARO saved more than 500 terabytes of data in its first year.
IBM recently announced that it has completed the acquisition of Trusteer, Ltd., a privately held leading provider of software that helps protect organizations against fraud and advanced security threats. On August 15, IBM announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Trusteer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"The acquisition of Trusteer builds on more than 40 years of IBM’s rich contribution to the security space,” said Brendan Hannigan, General Manager, IBM Security Systems. “Trusteer will extend our data security capabilities further into the cloud, mobile and endpoint security space. This acquisition helps provide our clients with comprehensive network and endpoint anti-malware solutions.”
Also announced on August 15, IBM is forming a cybersecurity software lab in Israel that will bring together more than 200 Trusteer and IBM researchers and developers to focus on mobile and application security, advanced threat protection, malware, counter-fraud, and financial crimes. This lab is an addition to IBM’s existing research and development facilities in Israel.
IBM Expands Support for Linux on Power Systems Servers
IBM recently announced new initiatives to further support and speed up the adoption of the Linux operating system across the enterprise. These include two new Power Systems Linux Centers and plans to extend support for Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technology to its Power Systems portfolio of server products.

IBM and Deutsche Telekom Launch Mobile App Cloud Service for Midmarket Customers
IBM and Deutsche Telekom recently announced a collaboration to provide the IBM MobileFirst platform in the cloud to small and medium sized (SMB) customers in Europe. Deutsche Telekom’s developer platform - Developer Garden - has launched the new cloud service, Developer Garden powered IBM Worklight, which allows developers to cost-effectively and quickly create apps for all mobile platforms and bring them to market faster than ever before.
As mobile apps proliferate, the cloud has emerged as a key enabler of this growth. Cloud delivery of mobile apps accelerates time to value and speed to market, making availability of new capabilities instantaneous. A recent study from IBM revealed that while only 24 percent of telecom survey respondents currently use cloud for sweeping innovation, in two years more than half (57 percent) of them plan to rely on cloud for business model innovation.
By offering IBM Worklight on the Deutsche Telekom cloud via Developer Garden, SMBs that traditionally may not have the resources to obtain enterprise-grade mobile tools will now be able to easily consume these technologies as a service without long term investment or planning.

IBM Announces US $17 Million Investment in New Cloud Datacenter
IBM recently announced it will invest US$ 17 million in a new data center located in Bogotá. The new center will provide Colombian companies with cloud computing and Big Data services, which will enable organizations to transform their business to meet the growing demands of the local and international markets and to offer flexible, high quality and personalized services for their customers. The new facility expands the US$8 million investment IBM made in Colombia when the company opened a datacenter in 2011.
From the 100 most important Colombian companies defined by the 2012 Colombian Superintendency's* Report, 88% of those companies are IBM clients, which together account for approximately 40% of the country's' industry GDP.

IBM Announces New Capabilities to Deliver Real-Time Analytics via the Cloud
IBM recently announced new IBM SmartCloud capabilities, including DB2 with BLU Acceleration that can result in as much as 25 times faster reporting and analytics, and SmartCloud availability for SAP's in-memory database, the SAP High Performance Analytics Appliance (SAP HANA).
New BLU Acceleration technology from IBM Research and Development labs adds innovative Dynamic In-memory analytics to DB2 database software on IBM SmartCloud to help companies and governments tackle Big Data by making it dramatically simpler, faster and more economical to analyze massive amounts of data. For example, Cognos Business Intelligence with Dynamic Cubes powered by DB2 with BLU acceleration delivers speed of thought analytics – with 18 times faster data loading and 14 times faster answers.
IBM also announced that its open IBM SmartCloud, built on decades of hosting experience, is now available for SAP HANA. The new offering includes a physical SAP HANA Appliance on IBM SmartCloud for SAP Applications, hosted on SmartCloud Enterprise+. In addition, a virtual SAP HANA Appliance is now available on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise (SCE) for early stage development and test.

One of the biggest buzzwords these days is
‘social media’. Everyone talks about how it’s important to consider a social

A recent altimeter
report, surveying private social networking decision makers for 250+ sized
organizations, asked how much impact a private social network had on
collaboration between teams and departments. 64.2% of executives told Altimeter
it was moderate to very significant. 65% said private social networking had an
impact on reducing internal emails, while another 60% were able to streamline a
business process. Other tangible business efficiencies as a result of internal
social networking included increased employee retention, faster decision
making, and a reduction in the volume of meetings
However, you can’t just jump right into it.
Companies need to know exactly what they want to get out of it, and then align
their business process with the right tools and platforms in order for it to be
a successful implementation.
Scientists from IBM recently announced the Accelerated Discovery Lab, a new collaborative environment specifically targeted at helping clients find unknown relationships from disparate data sets.

The notion of Moore’s Law for Big Data has less to do with how fast data is growing, and more with how many connections one can make with that data, and how fast those connections are growing. While companies could utilize data scientists to analyze their own information, they may miss insights that can only be found by bringing their understanding together with other experts, data sources, and tools to create different context and discover new value in their Big Data.
