This article describes the tools and how they were used to evaluate an IBM® WebSphere® Portal 7.0 performance and/or problem determination issue during a recent engagement at a customer site.
The list of tools addressed here is not complete; specifically, it does not include well known commercial tools used in many environments for load testing, such as CA Wily Introscope, IBM ITCAM, and HP LoadRunner. Instead, the tools we will discuss are a supplement to the customer-supplied tools. The process of performance management is complex and beyond the scope of this document.

Our Collaboration Services Solutions blog series continues with another profile of another exceptional member of the Collaboration Services team. It is our pleasure to introduce Stuart McKay.
Stuart McKay is a Solution Architect with the IBM Toronto lab in Canada. In 1997 he joined Lotus Development Corporation when it was a subsidiary of IBM shortly prior to its full integration into the company. Prior to joining IBM, Stuart worked for an IBM Business Partner as a software developer. However, he joined IBM as a consultant with Collaboration Services and has been one ever since. His current roles and duties include working on customer implementations and customer solutions rather than product development. He enjoys the social aspect of our collaboration solutions and demonstrating to customers how they can make it work for their own business success.

Our ISSC Blog series continues with this first installment of the "ISSC Radar" series where ISSC members share their insights and observations on what they feel are current and future trends.
John Norton recently celebrated his 10 year anniversary at IBM. His current role is an IT Specialist and managing consultant for IBM Software Services for Collaboration, but he has also done some Solution Architect work in his career. He brings an extensive number of technical skills in the areas of architecture infrastructure, migration, and deployment activities of the IBM Collaboration Solutions family of products. John has over 18 years experience in the IT industry which he considers makes him an "old schooler". He finds himself a master of a number of subject areas and quite knowledgeable in most areas of the IT industry.
John is observing a paradigm shift occurring in the industry where more and more clients are leveraging virtualization for their software application deployments. Over the years, he has fielded increased requests in this area in his customer engagements. In the past 6 years in fact, John has confirmed that virtualization has become fairly mainstream for enterprise software IT deployment activity. Over the years, John, and IBM colleagues such as Tim Speed, have taken time to understand these new virtualization technologies and how they impact IBM software products. In addition to this knowledge they have been collected real-world, field-tested best practices and methods for deploying virtualized ICS software environments. With this expertise and experience a group of individuals has been created within our IBM Software Services for Collaboration team that effectively assist our customers with successful enterprise deployments of ICS software applications on virtualized environments. John shares with us some of his insight on virtualization below.
Virtualization is often a viable option when your goals include:
Benefits of virtualization often include smaller, physical server footprints which typically incur impressive cost and energy savings, faster recovery response times, and simplified server management. By lowering the number of physical servers you can significantly reduce hardware maintenance costs. By implementing a server consolidation strategy, you can increase the space utilization efficiency in your data centers. By having each application within its own "virtual server" you can prevent one application from impacting another when changes are made. By developing a standard server image you can speed up server deployment times. You can also deploy multiple operating system technologies on a single hardware platform, further improving the efficiency of your data center and lowering your total cost of ownership.
Collaboration Services knows ICS software better than anyone and understands the caveats of trying to virtualize these environments. Where to begin?
The starting point for many customers, John has found, is that they often have several types of virtualized environments within their IT environment. This diverse exposure allowed John to develop best practices and methods to perform ICS software deployments successfully across varied virtualization platforms. Many customers who have tried IBM Collaboration Solutions software virtualization themselves often don't have a complete understanding how these specialized application products, like IBM Lotus® Domino® , interact at the virtualization level. There are an extensive number of integrated components involved, which makes gathering data and assessing the current IT environment essential, before any best practices or initial recommendations can be presented. John and his teams' initial data collection and assessment of ICS software virtualization projects always include asking a thorough list of pointed questions in order to plan an appropriate, customized solution that enables their customers to enjoy successful implementations.

In general terms, the ease of scalability is great for growing companies. Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) is one of the largest colleges in the UK, offering a range of academic and vocational courses to more than 35,000 learners each year. Employing over 1,350 people, BMet has three main campuses and several satellite centres. The college prides itself on remaining at the forefront of advances in education, thereby delivering a transformational learning experience to its students.
Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) is constantly seeking new ways to engage students and make education accessible to a more diverse user base. In order to synergise with the digital lifestyle of learners and compete in different markets, the college recognised that it needed to transform how it delivered learning.
Embarking on a strategic relationship with IBM, BMet began building “Classroom in the Cloud”, based on IBM SmartCloud® for Social Business. When the project is complete, up to 25,000 students and 1,350 staff will be able to use the solution to access learning through a variety of mediums including the web and smart phones.
