Today's blog comes from Dave Calvert.
"I have a marvelous Maximo implementation. I have hundreds of critical high valued assets to maintain, but I think I could yield better performance from my workers if I were to consider a mobile product. But I know IBM has multiple mobile products, so I wonder which one best fits my organization?".
This is a very common conundrum that Maximo customers face. Probably much more common than most of you would think. This Maximo customer is correct in the fact that they can likely yield greater productivity from their field trades if they were equipped with mobile technology. Having their maintenance workers equipped with mobile devices can reduce the use of paper, eliminate data entry time, and reduce errors. If the mobile applications were based on direct access to Maximo, or extensions of the Maximo business objects, then the customer is thinking along the right path in which to obtain the greatest return on their investment and the least cost to maintain. They are also correct in that IBM offers their Maximo customers more than one mobile option. The correct choice will largely depend upon their operating environment and will likely influence their device selection.
If the customer site is equipped with a reliable wifi network with broad coverage that will allow the mobile trade to remain connected with the network at all times, then the customer should consider the IBM Maximo Everyplace product. Maximo Everyplace will afford the user the opportunity to access configured screens, tailored to meet their specific work needs. Entry will be quick, and confined to only the data that their organization demands. The screens can be created using the same Application Designer that was used in the configuration of their regular Maximo applications. Maximo Everyplace may be used with an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, as well as any Android device, so there is wide flexibility when it comes to selecting the device that best fits the working environment.
On the other hand, many Maximo customer environments are less than accommodating when it comes to a wifi network. These customers demand a mobile application that can easily deal with interruptions in (or sheer absence of) network coverage. They also demand the flexibility to define how the data will be refreshed on the device, and rely on complete compatibility with the core Maximo Work Management, Asset, or Inventory applications. Customers in these situations should consider the IBM Maximo Mobile Suite. The Maximo Mobile applications are designed to be device agnostic, allowing the use of any device running either a Windows Mobile v5, v6, or v6.1 mobile operating system.
The choices that are open to customers often generate enthusiastic discussions centering around the best ways in which to maximize the value to your organization. When the end result is work teams excited about the time they can spend meeting their primary objective, getting more work done quickly and accurately with their new mobile applications, it is truly a great thing to see.
