Today's entry comes from Terry Ray.
Several energy industry analysts have been writing about the convergence between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) for many years. In my last blog (Smarter Energy), I talked about companies becoming ‘smarter’; that is, becoming instrumented, interconnected and intelligent. One of the ways that companies are becoming smarter is using one system to manage both enterprise assets and IT assets.
About a month ago, ABB, the global power and automation technology group, agreed to acquire Ventyx. This acquisition will combine the business optimization and planning offerings from Ventyx with the operational management, control and protection offerings from ABB. Clearly, the ABB/Ventyx suite will transcend the traditionally divided IT and OT domains – especially in the engineering and IT areas.
As the convergence between OT and IT plays out, it will be interesting to see if companies purchasing practices will also converge. That is, will customers have a preference to purchase solutions/services from one supplier or multiple suppliers? Further, who will have the final say in the purchasing decision – OT or IT? Thoughts?
Until next time…………
