The art of the possible: Watson + Maximo + RTAL for Healthcare

I'm guessing that by now, unless you have been buried under a rock, you have heard about IBM Watson appearing on the game show Jeopardy! If not, you need to check out the press release here. And to really set the mood you really need to at least view the clip from the PBS NOVA show called "The Smartest Machine on Earth" which aired on February 9th, take a look here.
Unlike IBM's 1997 Deep Blue, that applied rules to raw data to win chess matches, IBM Watson has under taken the complexities of understanding natural language and applied machine learning to the raw data and rules in order to answer questions in 3 seconds. Understanding the variety of meanings of natural language can be daunting if you think about it.....sometimes I wish people could understand what I mean! The IBM Research team has worked to "educate" Watson over the last 4 years to prepare for this task. When you watch how Watson learned from its early mistakes, you can see the possibilities for applying this technology to real world challenges.
Four years in the making, so you can understand why there has been a lot of excitement and pride building across IBM for this event! Just as when the Chevy Volt came to IBM, Research Triangle Park (refer here for more information) today we had local news coverage at the IBM RTP site as well.......this time for the "IBM Watson: Jeopardy! Viewing Party" with the local ABC 11 news channel covering the festivities.
Analysts, commentators and bloggers everywhere are buzzing about Watson & the possibilities.......especially when it comes to healthcare. Just take a look at what Daniel Matlis, Founder and President of Axendia has to say ... link. Star Trek might not be too far fetched! When you think about it, healthcare is currently one of the most daunting industries across the world. Forget about the medical data aspect, think about the assets...... Dare I say that if we could just find the assets in the hospital & know their maintenance status, we could save millions! In addition to saving money, many times time is of the essence to solving healthcare challenges. For example solving the challenges of quarantining contaminants & infectious diseases. Hospitals always need to be prepared for these challenges by having the historical information of their assets and patients.
