Have you been experiencing warmer than normal weather where you are? Felt like you were melting? Whether it's global warming or just luck, this summer has broken a lot of records! Which got me thinking............how reliant we are on air conditioning! What a perfect topic for this edition of Maximo Mary's Microphone........time to put on the hard hat & take on air handlers!
And who better to interview than John Lepper, Site Energy Coordinator at the IBM Research Triangle Park, NC site and resident expert on IBM Facilities Management solutions.
You might remember John from the May 4th blog where we took a look at the cultural shift for facilities managers moving to smarter building technologies. In that blog John told us how facilities managers were reluctant at first to try the new technology, but once they saw how it could make their jobs easier they got on board.
At that point in time I also mentioned that the IBM RTP site had experienced a $100K savings in energy in the first 4 months of implementation. In the last 3 months, they have added another $56K or 985.5MWh more in energy savings.
An example, just like a picture can be worth more than words, so in our interview, John takes us through "a day in the life of the facilities manager" from the moment that an air handler displayed an alert within the IBM Smarter Buildings solution on the IBM Maximo Asset Management "mashup" screen. Once John received the email alert, he dives into the rule based criteria on the air handler that drove the alert. From there you will see the various screens within the IBM TRIRIGA Energy Optimization solution that helped John's team to investigate the history and prepare for the "service call" to the air handler.
In the end the static pressure switch had to be replaced and more efficient air conditioning (using both air handlers) was restored to the building. And good thing because with the record breaking heat this summer we did not need to be stressing the air handlers any more than necessary!
Take a look at the video.
