Maximo Instrumental on the Manufacturing Floor of the GM Chevrolet Volt

On November 1, 2010 General Motors brought Chevrolet Volts to Research Triangle Park, NC for IBMers to test drive........right here at the IBM site!!!! It was all part of the Volt Unplugged 12 city tour showcasing the functionality and capability of the Chevrolet Volt, the world's first electric vehicle with extended-range capability.
So why is GM coming to an IBM location? Well did you know that over 10 MILLION lines of code control every function in the Volt? IBM Software is a key partner that helped GM deliver the Volt on time, as promised, in just 29 months and will continue to partner with GM to speed global development of new vehicles. Perhaps not as obvious as the role of the IBM Rational division in the development of the Volt, IBM Maximo Asset Management also plays a key role on the manufacturing floor of the Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the Volt is manufactured. Maximo is key to providing global enterprise asset management to over 100 GM sites, including the Hamtramck plant.
GM has used Maximo Asset Management for 16 years and relies on it for predictive condition based maintenance that provides real-time status of equipment health conditions. Analyzing data about a paint robot, for example, can help them to know when its precision will need to be adjusted, to maintain quality targets and avoid deeper maintenance that would cause it to be down for say a week. If this type of predictive maintenance can reduce downtime from 1 week to 1 hour, you see the productivity gains that can be made & ultimate impact to GM's bottomline. Over the past year, this approach has enabled GM to reduce downtime and to increase fix rates.
GM is engaged in sharing best practices for asset management for automotive manufacturing floor delivery, quality and maintenance and is on the Maximo Manufacturing User Group Leadership Committee. This committee includes various manufacturing industry leaders who meet regularly to discuss innovative approaches for improving manufacturing floor output.
