Any industry can benefit from implementing an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system, but in a fleet environment, where the reliability of your assets directly drives your income, it becomes a more critical element for success. An important requirement in implementing an EAM system is to ensure that the procedures are in place for the system-related activities of your organization. These should be developed, implemented and enforced using Best Practices for your industry as a guide, and should contain the steps required to utilize your EAM system to its full capability. The procedures must be published and reviewed with all applicable personnel and management commitment to these procedures emphasized.
Too often, an EAM system is put in place, but the supporting procedures are neglected or not enforced by management. This support should start at the top of the management hierarchy and flow down to the supervisors working with the employees in the work force. They should be tailored to ensure compliance to any regulatory agencies governing your operations as well as supporting the transactions inherent in your EAM system.
Procedures should be developed as a first step when implementing an EAM system. These procedures apply to activities such as identifying work, processing work, preventive and predictive maintenance processes, requesting materials, purchasing materials, etc. Representatives from the involved departments should be an integral part of the team creating these processes and management for these departments should exhibit their support in an active manner.
