IDC Energy Insights’ recent report – Worldwide Utility Smart Grid Spending Forecast, 2010-2015, indicates that smart grid spending will increase 17.4% globally for hardware, software and services and will reach nearly $46.4 billion worldwide in 2015.
In an earlier blog (January 23, 2012), I discussed ‘smart meters’ and new features in the Maximo for Utilities solution that support smart meters as a new asset class. Several utilities have already taken advantage of these new capabilities and we expect the number of companies to increase as meter deployments continue to roll-out.
As the debate continues over generation plant closing/relicensing, advocates/opponents are suggesting conservation as the answer. As the debate continues, we expect to see many utilities step up with aggressive mass ‘smart’ meter deployments.
