This is a blog posting from Eric Luyer, Market Manager for IBM Asset Management, Industrial Manufacturing.
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) activities are a global challenge for every company,, regardless of your location - USA, Europe or Asia/Pacific. In all locations, there is a growing focus to safeguard the well-being of our employees and consumers, but also to keep the environment clean and green with a focus on sustainable manufacturing. We are experiencing more and more regulations put in place now from both governmental and industry organizations that are increasingly complex to manage. A few examples include global HSE regulations such as the US EPA’s Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Reporting Rule and proposed greenhouse gas endangerment finding under the Clean Air Act; the European Union REACH regulation; the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants; and other regulations as ISO14001 Environment Management System; and OHSA’s18001 Job Health Safety Management System.
New and more complex regulations are appearing in many industries, such as: Oil & Gas, Chemicals, Mining, Utilities, Life Sciences, Electronics, Transportation, Manufacturing, and even Government. To offer some perspective as to the importance of Health, Safety, and Environment in two companies, these quotes were extracted from the corporate websites:
On September 2, 2011, IBM announced the availability of IBM Maximo Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager. This optional “module” provides key extensions to Maximo Asset Management with key capabilities for incident, change, and non-conformance management, investigations, and regulatory compliance. When the HSE Manager is coupled with Maximo’s proven capabilities in work management, scheduling, preventative maintenance, job plan creation, monitoring, document control, reporting and collaboration; the solution provides closed-loop management integration focused on execution of operational excellence and becomes the common thread between safety, production, and quality. Maximo customers will benefit by linking HSE activities to specific assets, classes of assets, locations; thus providing a complete venue to view and manage associated risks and compliance.
The new capabilities provided in Maximo Health, Safety, and Environment Manager address the broader EH&S and sustainability areas such as Corporate Responsibility; Green House Gas (GHG) and Energy Management; Product Stewardship; Environmental, Health & Safety; and Operational Risk Management.
