This week's Maximo Monday blog comes to you from Dave Calvert
I think most will agree that there is nothing worse than a mobile technician having to search their mobile application to find the screen they need, or the buttons to push to complete their work. Add to that the need to navigate through unnecessary fields or tabs, and you have a user acceptance disaster waiting to happen.
To obtain true value from any mobile application, it is always best to get back to basics. When all or part of a system is being introduced to the user community, I have always suggested that customers take advantage of this “best opportunity for change”. This usually means that the customer is not going to get a better opportunity to re-evaluate the roles of their users for a long time. Make use of it and step back to look at exactly what the requirements of each role will be.
For Maximo Everyplace users, this means that customers clearly define exactly what each mobile user will need to do and actions that they will perform as part of their role. Where possible, consolidate roles so that the setup and administration of security groups and Maximo Everyplace templates will be all that much simpler. Every effort should be made to eliminate unecessary fields and tabs, and place appropriate buttons on the screen only where needed. The overall goal is to create a user experience that is efficient and intuitive. This not only increases the willingness of new users to adopt the applications, but reduces the time required for training of new users. Successful implementations often provide the mobile user with a mechanism to contribute toward any future improvements in the user interface efficiency. Users then feel like they are a part of the evolution of the applications and are more willing to “talk it up” amongst their peers.
For those reading about Maximo Everyplace for the first time, Maximo Everyplace is a versatile mobile add-on to Maximo that, quite simply, allows Maximo users to access their role specific Maximo applications from their mobile device. The design of the Maximo Everyplace product utilizes the device browsers to access Maximo. It leverages Maximo’s Application Designer to create role specific mobile applications that can easily be tailored to meet the specific requirements of the mobile user in virtually any role.
